I'm so fed up with raccoons. I lost two jersey giants last night, & last week i lost a columbian rock cross to a fox under my bedroom window. Hearing her panicked squawking in the middle of the night was horrific, & it all happened so fast, there was nothing I could do to stop it. (She liked to...
This is my favorite hen, Dic-Z... Named by my teenagers. Dic-z likes to ride on the golf cart w me! She is my first hen to lay an egg, and she is awesome! Here is a pic of her first egg, and I have man hands!!!
Thanks everybody! I'm amazed at the amount of information on this forum. I don't know what I'd have done without this place!!! Every now and then I catch myself thinking if only my dad or grandpa were still alive, I could call them with my chicken questions... But then, I remember to go look...
I don't care for white Leghorns. I actually have 2, and they are okay, but it's what we had when I was growing up. They just don't bring back very good memories.
I have a fan in the coop, but I've also just bought a big fan with a thermostat to install near the roof of the coop. I can't wait to get it in for them... I know it'll make a huge difference.
My 5 lb Yorkie wants the chicks REALLY bad! My yellow lab wants the ducks really bad. My German Shepard wants them all really bad. My great dane is curious, but thankfully doesn't want any of them at all.

If you got a Dist lic. You may be able to sell to small shops, like Amish stores or little farm stores but I think there's a lot of red tape or stipulations.
I'm going thru this right now, and it is a ton of red tape. If you are selling directly to the end user it's not so bad, but if...
I'm so excited!!! We've finally finished the coop, & decided on a permanent location. We've drug that coop all over this farm with our tractor looking for the perfect permanent location. We wanted a spot with the right amount of shade during the hot part of the day, the right lay of the land...
We bought one of those metal storage buildings from Lowe's parking lot, insulated it with the sheets of styrofoam insulation and then hung plywood on the walls. It's only a couple of weeks old, but so far so good. Once the plywood walls go up it doesn't feel so much like a metal building which...
I haven't seen the fox again, but that certainly doesn't mean he's not out there lurking around waiting for the right time to steal my baby chicks! Y'all, I'd be devastated if he got to my chicks.
The coyotes got 8 of my ducks a few months ago :-( I was so attached to them that it truly broke...
Thanks for the info. I just want to try it in my coop. I have a moisture problem around the waterer, and thought it would help that. I also like the idea of it for flea control in the yard. I will keep searching locally. I hate the thought of mail ordering anything that weighs 50 lbs...
My oldest DS and his friend were on the Gator this afternoon around 2 pm, and saw a fox lurking about 20 ft from my Hen House! He didn't get any of my chicks, but I'll bet he was scouting... That makes me so mad!
I went to the Southern States today looking for DE and theirs didn't say "food grade" so I didn't buy it, but I did take a photo of the bag with my phone thinking someone would look at it to see if it's okay to use in the coop or not. I just realized I can't post photos on here though. So, my...

A patient of DH (DH is a small town dentist) just surprised us with 14 baby RIR pullets from the same...
Hi Everybody! My name is Kriston and I live on 40 acres in Western Kentucky. DH (of 20 years) and I bought this place a year ago. I was raised on a farm and had chickens during my childhood, but suprisingly I remember quite a bit about them. We have 3 children, two of which are still at...
