I have now had three successful hatches, so I guess I am officially an addict. Yet, it still scares me when I see a chick sprawled out on its side. They always pop right up when I approach, but I just haven't gotten used to it. Anybody else still doing double-takes?
My pen of egg eaters have been cured...permanently. It was way too hot to fire up the grill, so they went into the saute pan with onions and peppers. They were about four months old and seemed a little tough. For eating is it better to do so earlier. What is your experience/advice?
My first hatch was 51 out of 66 and they hatched on days 19-21. I adjusted the temperature and kept the humidity below 50 until day 14 and raised above 50 after. Today is day 16 for hatch #2 and many of the eggs are already pipped.
We put a chicken egg in the quail pen and sent my youngest to gather eggs. He came in all excited, proclaiming, "Look it is a double yoke egg!!" For some reason, he has yet to find any more.
This week I sold my first quail - 20 3 week olds and 5 dozen eggs. I won't be making any money but it will cover the next trip to the feed store. My wife is happy - this is my first sustainable hobby!
51 days of 100+. 34 of those in a row and counting. I put lamp out for my newly hatched chicks and they all went to the other side of the pen, which is on a screened in porch.
Set 66 coturnix eggs in Brinsea Eco 20 on July 1. Temperature has been rock solid 99.5. I did not check humidity. Put water in one slot and turned three times a day. Placed water in both slots on day 14. Nothing yet. I guess I should have gotten a gauge to check humidity? Any suggestions...
Here was my first try:
Skinned and halved
Couple hours in brine
Dry
Sprinkle with pepper and garlic
Saute an onion in a little butter
Add quail
Flip
Add a dash or two of red wine at the end
Delicious!!
Work today.... But tomorrow I am taking my kayak on an overnight float trip on the river. A little fishing, a little paddling, a fine cigar and camping under the stars! I would love to be able to add "a campfire" to that list but steady 100s + no rain = burn ban.
