Sponsored Post Nestera Coop Giveaway! Total worth $1595

I like my chickens to "mow" my grass for me, so I love that the Nestera Coop looks like it would be easy to move around the yard.

    Joining the Work Force

These three hens were raised away from other chickens, so they haven't had anyone to set an example for them as far as the "egg song" goes. I was kind of hoping they wouldn't get into it as much as the chickens do at my brother's place. It's a cacophony over there most mornings, particularly...

    What is this chicken thinking?

So, you've been keeping this hidden from me the whole time.

    What is this chicken thinking?

Ummm, warm hands. I believe this will be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

    Joining the Work Force

Ginger spent all day, November 5, preparing a nest, three nests actually, one per nesting box in the chicken coop. On the morning of November 6, she created initial round depressions in the straw of the laying boxes, while her two sisters stood outside the nesting house door, watching with...

Thank you so much for the information. I like talkative birds too, so maybe I could handle one chicken that isn't quite so cuddly. I wish I could find cuddly and heat tolerant in the same breed. It seems like most of the heat tolerant ones are flighty though.

    Cross Breeds!!!!

The Polish X Cochin is a surprisingly attractive cross. Nice if you could get a whole flock with that moderate tophat and the pretty fluffy legs.

What Breed of roosters are these?

Looks like I can only do one photo per post. Here is the Rhode Island:

What Breed of roosters are these?

You have a lovely pair of hybrids Given the prevalence of breeds, I'd say the big one has Rhode Island Red in him. The other one is very small if he's full grown, so he probably has some bantam in him. He could possibly be a Lakenvelder cross breed, the coloration is all wrong, but the...

    URGENT! GENDER?

So sorry they are both roosters. If you are in an area that won't allow roosters, you should probably avoid buying from the "Easter sales" crowd of chicken sellers that come out in the Spring. A lot of local feed stores and pet stores will sell off male chicks around Easter time and don't...

    Breed?

Lovely Easter Eggers you have there. I'm not familiar with Marans, but we did have a cochin once, and she wasn't very fluffy until she got older. Hope you do have a cochin, ours was a sweetie.

    Rooster or hen?

I'd guess pullet as well. She's probably just working toward being the alpha hen. My astralorp hen decided she wanted to be alpha pretty early as well. She was never mean about it, didn't chase the other chickens around, but quite insistent that she was going to be in charge so she delivers...

is this a silver duckwing phoenix??

It's always a wild guess at that age, but it looks like it may be a rooster . It has the stance of one of the "game" breeds so that's a positive indication, but if it's mixed breed, I don't think there is anyway to tell at this point if it's Phoenix, or some other type of game breed. This...

Are your Spitzhaubens friendly? I'd like to try Spitzhaubens since I've heard from several sources that they do well in Arizona heat, but I really like my chickens to be cuddlers as well. I've had good luck with Australorps for both heat tolerance and friendly behavior. They are lovely...

White Leghorn 2 weeks - gender please?

The only way to determine gender at two weeks is to have the chicks professionally vent sexed. There are videos and instructions on how to do that, but I personally wouldn't try it. The chick has to be squeezed to vent sex, and squeezing can injure delicate little chicks. Even professionals...

I need to vent. Is that okay?

It's hard to break someone else of a spending habit, but maybe the next time your daughter is planning to go shopping, you could take her and the children to the park instead. Or offer to drive them to a free museum, the local library for "story time", or go to one of the bargain movie theaters...

Thanks! I'll give him a call. I live in Arizona, so they'd definitely need to be mailed.

    Light Sussex

Does anyone know a mail order hatchery that sells light sussex chicks? We've traditionally purchased from McMurray, but they only offer the speckled sussex variety. I could potentially go for eggs, my brother has an incubator he'd probably let me use to hatch some, but I've generally just...

    Just got an enforcement notice

The original poster has been caught up in the chicken controversy here in Chandler. The City of Chandler was considering a proposal to allow backyard chickens within the city limits. They've debated the issue since April, and just recently voted against it. I guess they decided to start...

    Young Rooster With Leg Injury

I took some advice from various posters and kept him in a sling all day. He accepted it pretty well, though he kept knocking over his water dish, darn rooster. I took him out of the sling last night so he could sleep more easily, and he was able to sit down on both legs, like a normal chicken...
