    ostracized hen

So I made a nice cage with a mesh bottom and put my broody hen in jail. Hopefully she will lay an egg soon so she can go free. I should have realized she was broody. Part of the learning process I guess. Thanks BYC for enlightening me.

    ostracized hen

I have four hens left in my little flock of brown sex links. For the past 10 months they were inseparable, free-ranging all over. In the last month I have noticed that one is constantly in the nest box, and the other hens have ostracized her. They chase and peck at her whenever she is out of...

    traumatized chickens

Thanks for the bereavement counseling. I had six brown sex-links. We were getting six eggs every day. Now, alas, we will be down to four if the trauma wears off. Quarantining will be difficult. I will have to enter into a new construction project. Man, these chickens are a lot of work...

    traumatized chickens

Last night, some idiot (Me) forgot to lock the hens in for the night. This morning we found that something, most likely a coon, went into the coop, dragged two hens out, and brutally murdered them. The rest of the flock (four) were very skittish and did not want to go outside into the yard in...

    chicken feed

thanks for the feedback. I was concerned about the pig products in the feed, but after further reading, the only thing I am really concerned about is where the pigs came from. I wonder if organic feed has animal protein in it, but from animals that were not given hormones and such. Thanks again.

    chicken feed

    first eggs

Is it normal that one or more of my golden buffs that are supposed to be 10 weeks old have laid their first eggs? The birds seem large to me, but what do I know. I am new to this. We got them last week as started pullets. They were supposed to be 9 weeks old. We got them from a fairly large...
