Integrating my 5 week olds Help

Maybe I will try keeping them in the brooder as long as they will fit and hope that it is long enough for me to get the meat chicken pullets butchered, then move them into the mock coop with the rest of the meat chickens there will be room then. Do you think they would do alright with the meat...

Integrating my 5 week olds Help

I think I've read on here, that the mom will protect her chicks from the other chickens. I kept wishing that I would get a broody hen before my order came in, unfortunately no such luck I think most of the broodiness has been bred out of my chickens.

Integrating my 5 week olds Help

They have to be in the coop as I only have one coop and keeping them in the house another 11-12 weeks isn't an option. They could probably stay in the coop brooder another 2 weeks tops then it will be too small. Food isn't going to be an issue as they have their own feeders and waterer in the...

Integrating my 5 week olds Help

I have three 5-week old chicks (a jersey giant, and 2 polish) A couple of days ago, I moved them out to the coop into a kinda makeshift brooder. I chicken wired in two of the bottom nest boxes and opened the wall in between and put their food, water, light in it. I left them closed in there...

Hen is laying eggs with a hole in it??

The egg's "hole" is in the shell and not pass the membrane. The "crust " is brownish orange . The hole , in both eggs , is on the large or bottom side. It reminds me of a burn mark.

Hen is laying eggs with a hole in it??

Yes they get oyster shell several times a week and we also collect all the eggs every morning. It could be one pecking, but the reason I'm not sure is the hole is so perfectly shaped.

Hen is laying eggs with a hole in it??

This is the second egg I've gotten with a hole towards the bottom about the size of a pencil eraser. Inside the hole and somewhat on the edge is a hard crusty material. Should I be concerned? Is this normal?

    Straw or hay?

I read somewhere, that if you are using the deep litter method in your coop you should stick to pine as the straw tends to solidify and get stuck together making it very hard to clean. I am new to chickens but I have been using pine in the coop since they went out and it seems to work very...

Our Girls are still afraid of the dark? How long?

I'm a first timer too, but this seemed to work for my chicks. I would turn on the light about 15 minutes before dark and go down fill up there feed and waterer, tell them good night and then shut the doors that took about 5 minutes, then I would walk up to the house and unplug the night about 3...

6-7week old chick charging feet...is this normal behavior?

My chicks did the same thing for about a week after they were put outside. I would have on sandals and they would try to creep up on the toes like they were food. What I started doing was vigilantly watching my feet and when one would get ready to peck I would yell no and push them with my...

Outside in 95 degree heat today?

Also, if at all possible, freeze a couple of gallon milk jugs and set them in front of the fan as it blows into their coop. It brings the temp. down a couple of degrees and every little bit helps in this horrible heat. Funny you said that, we're in S.W. PA and having a heat wave. The coop...

help knowing if this is a roo? Pic Heavy

I was almost sure when he started feathering in and was so light, but like I said the thing that makes me question it is his comb looks just like the others no bigger maybe even smalled than 1or2 of them and same color. Anyone else got an idea?

Some pics of my not so babies anymore

This is my first set of chicks and I have to say, I am becoming partial to the Brahmas. They are just cool, even though they're younger they have to be first to try everything. They are really social too. One day I was putting them up for the night and all the chicks were around my feet and...

help knowing if this is a roo? Pic Heavy

This is a picture of my 6 week old red sex chicken. He/She has always been lighter in color than all the rest and feathered in much slower than his sisters. I don't notice a big difference in his comb or leg size but his coloring is so much like a red sex rooster. his whole body and this is...

To light or not to light?

There are 12 of them. They definately won't have the light forever because right now it's extension cords...lol Last night I got to pooped to wait for answers so they had the light but tonight I think I'm going to start weaning them off. Tonight leave the light on for an hour after I close...

3 wk olds - how to take outside?

In fact I have no way to enclose them, that I can think of, to give them outdoor access. At least without buying something which I don't really want to do... Maybe you could go and buy a roll of chicken wire and make them a small circle to play in, and it wouldn't cost any extra if you are...

To light or not to light?

Can my 5 and 6 week old chicks be without the light tonight? The temp is supposed to be a low of 68 and their coop is really warm right now. I turned the light on so they would go in, but I'm thinking I could turn their light off tonight. They've been with a regular hundred watt bulb the last...

What to do in the rain?

I had the same question a few weeks ago only difference is we had a cold snap on top of the rain so I did keep them in the coop all day. This week my chicks are now 5 and 6 weeks old and we had some rain, but warm weather and they really were smart enough to come in out of the rain. They...
