I had seven adorable Silkies - five hens and two black roos - that were all lost to hawks over the past year.
I'm looking for a roo and a hen or two to keep him company. I have a very large pen where they will be kept.
I live in northern Ocean County, NJ, not far from Six Flags Great Adventure.
I lost my sweet Silkie rooster this past winter due to a respiratory illness. I have three Silkie hens that free range, and I would like a new guy to take care of them.
I live in Central New Jersey, close to I-195.
My chickens hide under my huge holly bush if they see a hawk when they're free ranging.
Our pen is covered with twine. A Cooper's got in, but my Jersey Giant roo beat it up. It hasn't come back.
A Red Tail has been hanging around lately, but it can't get through the netting, and it won't...
Our TSC had Australorps and Golden Laced Wyandottes last year. They carry mainly Leghorns, RIRs and production chickens, but they always order rarer breeds. They go fast.
They order from McMurray and local hatcheries.
I'll be looking for Silkies this year.
My husband ordered from McM in November. He got Red Stars, Black Stars, Pearl Leghorns and Ameracuanas. He expected the rare chick to be a roo. He was right.
We're the proud owners of a handsome White Phoenix rooster named Orion.
I have twine strung over my pen. I got the idea from this forum!
That keeps the large hawks away, but lately, I've had problems with a Cooper's hawk. Two attacks in the last week - it gets in the pen because it drops through the holes (I have to reinforce them again)- but my huge Jersey...
I have two RIR hens, Radish and Rosie. They're not keen on being picked up, like some of my other hens (quieter breeds), but their curiosity makes up for it. They love free ranging, and they love to run up to us when we're out in the yard to see what we're doing.
Rosie was the runt of my...
Our roo used to be nasty - he nipped at everyone but me. In his defense, he's young and needed to be taught who was HIS boss. He'll be a year old in March. He hasn't bothered anyone in months.
He beat up the Cooper's hawk that got into the pen earlier in the week, allowing me enough time to...
I have four of these gals. They're excellent layers and are so sweet and calm!
They love being handled, and when we're outside when they're free ranging, they follow us everywhere.
They're big, puffy, fluffy, and fun to watch! This is an excellent breed for kids.
Fluffy is a standout in our flock of 30. She's beautiful, her eggs are big, and she's so friendly! She's easy to handle, she'll follow us around and let us pet her, and she loves to come in the house and nest on our laps. She can sit there for an hour or more without being disturbed.
She's...
Love this breed. I have a pair. My hen is a sweetheart. She's very gentle and nests in my arms when I hold her. My rooster is very protective of his hens and lets all of us pick him up once in a while. He'll be mushy for a bit, then go back to doing his job.
Wonderful breed, highly...
I have five. Three are a bit flighty, but two are the friendliest and sweetest chickens around. They come up to you in the pen and want you to hold them, cuddle them, and pet them. They're very talkative and just fun to be around in general.
One of the five has just started laying again...
^ I agree. Once people try backyard chicken eggs, they never go back to supermarket eggs. At least that's what our customers tell us. They'd rather pay the $3 and get our fantastic eggs.
