One of my customers just got a rotten egg. Should I be so freaked out?

I've had a streak of bad eggs lately. I wouldn't feel bad but 1/2 of them went to my customers. I was mortified! I told them I'd refund their money and give each of them a free dozen. Hopefully that will keep them buying form me. I need to find a way to prevent bad eggs from going out in...

    Rotten Egg?

The exact same thing happened to me this weekend. Crack an egg for breakfast and WHAM! It was the sickest green goop and the smell matched the view. I don't know what happened. The egg couldn't have been more than 2 days old. I'm currently searching for ways to identify bad eggs before they...

    organic vs inorganic

It's a little more pricey to go organic but I'm going that route and have found some ways to reduce the cost difference. I found a small farm 'locally' (about 70 miles away) that grows, mills and sells organic feed here in Michigan. It's not 'certified' but I have gotten to know the farmers...

Should I be concerned about GIANT egg?

There may be a whole flock in that egg. It feels like it's filled with lead. Haha! Yeah, I'm guessing one of the austorlops produced that one. I'm attaching some more pics now that I was taught how to do it. Haha! Here's the little monsters free ranging in their first snow fall today...

What is the best way to dispatch/slaughter chickens?

I just 'graduated' my first roosters two weeks ago. I was very nervous but I felt like I should be the one doing the graduating instead of taking them to a processor where I didn't know how well they would have been handled and I wanted to make sure I got MY birds back since I've taken the...

Should I be concerned about GIANT egg?

I think I loaded a picture of it on my My Page but I'm very My Page unsavvy so I'm not sure if everyone can see it. Sometimes I cant find it.....

Should I be concerned about GIANT egg?

I collected eggs from my coop yesterday. I was shocked at how big one of them was. I cant even close the egg container when I put it in there. Curious, I grabbed my Kuhl egg scale to see what it actually weighed in at. Typically, my girls (black austorlops, sex links, rhode islands, EEs and...

Soy Based Chick and Layer Feed

Search around and see if there are any farms in your area that sell feed. I finally found one that sells organic feed, all kinds (with roasted soy, without soy, mixed w/molasses, layer mix, grower mix, etc..). I have to drive about 2 hours to get to it but they only charge $17 per 50# bag so I...

how much SQ. for each bird?

I'm doing the same thing, free ranging about every other day. I'm building my run right now. It's about 200SF for 25 birds. I think it will do. I've heard anywhere from 4-10 SF/bird but I think free ranging them often will reduce the run size requirement.

Hot Today. What treats did you give your chickens.

I have had good luck with frozen berries. I'll fill a plastic tupperware to the brim with blueberries, raspberries, etc.. Fill it with water and stick it in the freezer overnight. It turns into a block of ice packed with frozen berries. That way the ice will stay for a couple hours while the...

any ideas of what to plant in the run?

I read in a post somewhere that someone used 2x4s for a frame (2" side down, 4" tall), put a small hole mesh over it and set it on the ground so the grass could grow without the birds ripping it out roots and all. Then, when the grass grew tall enough to get through the mesh the birds would...

FANS in yer coops/runs?? Whos got em...........

I built my coop inside my garage. The ventilation was not great so I installed a gable fan with a thermostat. Then put a vent in the other gable to circulate fresh air in through the vent side and stale/hot air out the fan side. With the temps in the high 90s and humidity in the 90s as well...
