Lorain,
Welcome from one newbie to the next. We are one week ahead of you and just put our chicks out in their coop two days ago. Sounds like you are doing everything well. I wouldn't change anything as we did not do more. Ensuring food and clean water and a clean brooder and ours did fine. Now...
This took forever.....who would have thought but then again it was built only on weekends but still. So we finally have a 'finished' coop as the chicks are now out there and there a few minor things to do such as attach a human couple steps, attach rope to chicken door and hang the new larger...
We put ours outside for the first time last yesterday and they are 3 1/2 wks. They loved the run and were fine in the coop last night. We left the heat lamp on for them as the last few nights have been in the 60's.
I went with sand even though I could have left the grass and dirt alone. I feel the sand will make for a much easier clean-up of the run. I had 3 yards delivered yesterday and moved it with my tractor to the coop and remaining part of the run that did not have sand yet. I went with what we call...
dizzle's chicks :
i think i'm going to chance it and keep her. the farm don't have another one the same age. let's pray and hope that she turns out to be a lady i dont want to get a week old and raise it by herself.
Good idea!
Owl pellet. I know you're concerned about foxes, racoons but an owl will make quick work of chickens if they are roosting outside at night. If they are not, then you should be okay.
I'm curious as to whether I should place my chicken ladder that goes up to the roost up against a wall or leave it 'X' inches away. The ladder is approx. 6 inches wide and I want to make sure there is enough room for them to go up it without the wall being an impediment. I have 4 PBR's and 2...
I agree about putting a light in there if you can even if it is temporary. Run an extension and put a low watt bulb or heat bulb in there for just enough light to make them feel safe.
I've heard 3 weeks, leave them in the coop for another week so at week 4 they are good to be outside in the run. We're planning to put ours out tomorrow and they are 3 1/2 weeks with good feathering (4 PBR's & 2 RIR's). It's possible some breeds need longer in the brooder.
Hah, that is funny having to chase after them...well maybe not for you! Is that their FIRST day out from the coop or from the brooder??? They look very big for a brooder so I am assuming the coop. How old are they? We're planning on kicking ours out to the coop tomorrow and they are 3 1/2 weeks...
Unfortunately chickens are the favourite food for everything and sometimes just a game to other animals (dogs especially). I would follow the recommendations others have put forth, find out how he got in and address it. My belief is that if you have chickens, it means making sure they are as...
Could it be a 'Strike'? They will take small birds and are very fast. Likely smaller than what you saw.

How about a Peregrine...
They look good! With BPR's, I have read you have to take into account several things to determine sex. The girls are a darker black whereas the roos tend to be a lighter colour. Also the legs are darker and then obviously there is the comb development.
