I agree completely! I have a bird that broke her top beak completely off up to her nostrils which even ripped. I have no idea how she did it, but we kept it clean and applied the occasional antiseptic balm, and let her be a 'kitchen chicken' for a week or so until she started acting normally...
Duck question. I culled a peking last month because he quit walking. I thought maybe he had frostbitten his feet, but it went into a respiratory thing. It IS very cold here, but the ducks share the coop/barn with the chickens and it has 3 heat lamps, deep litter/bedding, and I close the door...
I had a roo who lost huge chunks of skin in a fox attack. Couldn't believe he lived through it. Bag Balm is an antiseptic vasaline type substance. That is all I used on him and it worked beautifully. Also - I fed him lots of scrambled eggs! ;0) great protien and they love them!!! Good luck!
Dealing with almost the same thing.... Mine is a two year old roo who I found in the rain, and he is eating and drinking and pooping but won't stand up and just falls over and doesn't even try to get up. He can move is legs, and they will sometimes support his weight... I did notice that his...
I have a silkie rooster that I found in the rain. He was standing up soaking wet and as I watched the ducks ran him over. He fell over and just stayed there. I thought he might be cold and/or dehydrated so I brought him in, gave him a warm bath to get the duck slime off him ;0) dried him...
This is Sparkles. She broke her beak a year ago - about where yours seems to have. I have no idea how it happened and I was completely horrified. That being said is doing perfectly fine and a happy hen. I cleaned it the best I could and did keep her inside a few days just to limit stress...
Oh I am so sorry! He sounds really cool. 20 lbs!!!!! I think my Roo weighs about 3, LOL. I have no idea what to tell you regaurding the infection, but bag balm is god send for any open wound on chickens. It is completely non-toxic, has the consistency of vaseline and has anteseptic...
I have a broody camping and she has completely pecked out all her belly feathers!!! Everyone on here assured me that is totally normal broody behavior!
Also she and about 3 others of my hens are molting and very thin right now. I would still really really watch her, but it can def, be a normal...

We had -4 the morning I found him like this. I was pretty sure that it was frostbite that just got pecked at, but on here EVERYONE disaggreed with me. I still think that's what it looks like, but... I duno. And we really didn't have any mosquitos even this summer here! But we have...
Pox doesn't bleed right? Unless they were ripped off by pecking? His are definetly scabbed but I have thouroghly studied all the pox photos I can find on here and really his aren't 'warty' looking at all, they don't stick out...

Thank you - he seemed to be doing well and the broody hens protects him like nothing I have ever seen. In fact just this morning I was asking I could bring him in with her when she hatches her eggs because he is literaly sittting under her with her 5 eggs. He's so funny - totally...
This is my poor bantum roo that I thought had frost bite.... It has been a week since that post.
I found him as a bloody mess and tried to clean him up, he had def. been pecked at. Now he hides under our broody
hen and won't come out. I have decided he is scared of the silkie roo and that is...
We had a fox attack and a very similar wound. Neosporin (Not the pain reliever type - that can be toxic), and bag balm. No bandages even. This roo healed up so perfectly! It looked like I sewed it but It is a natural healed scar. Here are the before and after photos... The only extra thing...
Oh I am so sorry you are dealing with this. It is SO hard to know what to do. I am certainly no expert but have had several severe injuries within my flock lately. One piece of advice I have been given regularly is that if in 2 days they are not considerably better that it may be kinder to...

Is it really bad to candle them if I do it quickly? I can do it fast and in the coop if I turn out the light in there. I just don't want to get my kids all 'eggcited' and then none of them are fertilized....
