my Red Rangers, 6 wks old. kinda pix heavy

They look just like my Rhode Island Reds and are both female with very red combs and wattles. Big Red has a very large comb while her sisters is not as big (hense her name, lol) They are dual purpose, but the meat gets tough as they age. Typically people that use them as dual purpose process...

Thanks for all the responses! Pele, she (putting out the female energy here, lol) was a caramel color when she first came. We had ordered 3 Red Rangers and 3 Cornish so I just assumed she was growing a little slower. then she started to roost and I decided she was definetly not a meat bird...

this little runt can not be a meatie... so what is it? pic included

Hi all, So my DH and I purchased 6 meaties (3 Cornish and 3 Red Rangers) from our local feed store. As the weeks have passed (this saturday will be 6 weeks) I've notice that one of these chicks is not like the others. he/she is a little runt and roosts up high while the rest of the gang...

sick chick with reoccuring crop issues may have finally had enough...

Well, after months of crop issues I think Red has finally had enough. She's no longer roosting, she's shaking and looks to be having a hard time balancing herself. Very weak. It makes me so sad to see her this way. It all began last summer when she gorged on a few clumps of grass I stupidly...

Hi, thanks for your reply! we have 2 Cornish and 3 Red Rangers (I lost a Cornish the first night we had them). Their wing feathers are really coming in, fuzz everywhere else. I did raise the lamp up a few inches today, like you mentioned, they seemed to be moving away from the heat. I'll...

when to remove the heat lamp and open the brooder

Hi, Its our first attempt at raising meaties and am wondering when I should be turning off the heat lamp? My plan was to start raising the lamp so that by this weekend I could turn it off during the day. Temps have been 60's during the day and 40's at night (We're in CT and the weather has...

Getting paranoid about combining existing hens with the chicks

we had our seperated until they were "teenagers" 12 weeks or so. My DH built a coop in the coop, however if thats not an option, you could always buy or borrow a large wire dog crate and put them in there for a couple weeks so the older hens get used to having the little ones around...

Introducing a new pup to the girls

Thanks for the responses! Dixiebeast, I am hoping I can have a pooch as good as yours! He's been coming out for my morning chores and has seen them through the fence. Sometimes I swear the chickens are more interested in him than he is of them, lol. When he's not making any sudden...

Introducing a new pup to the girls

Hi BYC! Just adopted a new pup named Fin. He's a 6 month boxer / lab mix. I've taken him out with me in the morning to open up the coop and he is super excited to see the girls start coming out one by one. He doesn't bark, just wines like he wants to play. I'd love to be able to let them...
