Thanks for your kind words. I've brooded three times now and this latest breed, the Easter Eggers, are my first hens to go broody. I thought that I should move her and isolate them, but then I didn't know if the re-introduction would go smoothly or not. My DH just didn't want little chicks in...
Need some encouragement. My DH asked if we could let one of our broody hens hatch her eggs. I really didn't want to, but he wanted to see what would happen... So this is what happened, she hatched out two cute little chicks and then left the nest. The remaining eggs got pretty cold. One egg had...
That's what I'm sayin'. Although I got three yesterday and it was the hottest day of the year. I had to put a fan in the coop to get the temp down from 104 degrees. The girls slept comfortably last night.
Two more things this morning I noticed; 1. her comb and wattle were grey/brown instead of the nice deep red it used to be and 2. When she took a poop it was watery and clear. Is that broody as well?
I have 5 BPR hens that just turned a year old and have been in great health. One hen today I noticed sitting down and it struck me as odd, but I didn't really think about it until later this evening. My girls free-range and I saw four of them doing their usually walk/sweep of the lawn...where...
1. Still in progress, start date, July 2011. Window trim and paint job still needed. Also want a rain gutter.
2. Take the budget and light it on fire. I like to think I'm enjoying the most luxurious eggs you can't buy.
Update in the rooster....He has been re-homed. The final straw was a recent fox attack in which the rooster was the fist chicken to run to the coop, hens be ******. Now, the only reason I wanted a rooster was to have a bird willing to put himself in harms way so that the other girls could get...
The fox tried to take another hen, but he only managed to injure her and she passed 48 hours later. I was very upset that it happened again. Since then, all the girls are cooped up in their coop and run and every time I walk out the door, they rush out into the run and start clucking, wanting to...
A fox just took one of my hens this morning. I'm so darn mad! The same fox attempted to get one of the hens a few days ago and almost did, but my husband scared him away just in time. The fox dropped the hen it was trying to take and she turned out to be just fine. So what happened this...
So, today ends the journey for my first rooster, Pippin. His aggressive antics have won him a one-way trip to the broiler. Now, I liked having him around and would have put up with him if it were just me, but I have two children under the age of three and I didn't want to take any chances. My...
Well, I attempted to return her to the flock, but she didn't really want to do anything. She just stood there. No one bothered her. I watched her for awhile, but then I took another good close look at her. She had an enormous poop stuck to all her fine butt feathers. So, I took her back inside...
Friday morning, my husband ran a fox off, but not before the fox tried to take one of the hens. He had her in his mouth, but when my husband chased him, he dropped her. She lost a lot of feathers and was shaken up, but I brought her in the house and put her in a big cage. She rested for the...
