These were the first I ever owned. Got them from Tractor Supply. Great and huge egg production for two years. Spotty on the third. Unfortunately all three that I had were lost to predation in their third year.
I hadn't given any thought to critters under the coop until recently. I'm not sure at this point. I'll have to think about it. I've got 6 buff orpingtons and 6 new Hampshire reds coming in about 2 weeks, so time is short.
Won't hurt to have more insects. That just adds protein to their diet. I've never seen my girls turn down a bug. I've actually watched them "fight" over them. Snails are fun. It takes a while to get through the shell.
Scour craigslist for free pallets. It's a good source for cheap lumber. They require more work, but that's the trade off. I just ordered hardware cloth from www.zorotools.com. Delivered it was a bit more that 1/2 the price of Lowes.
I've hung a cabbage in my run in the past to give the girls something to do. If you hang it from a rope or chain or something, when they peck at it. the cabbage will swing and they have to chase it. Of course, that might be more fun for me.
Rodzilla, what is the roofing material? It looks like stone. The run looks very muddy. Are you going to put pine shavings or stay or something in there?
I too was going to joke about the beer too, but now I'm actually interested. Do they actually like beer? Do I have to use good beer like you are or can skimp and give them PBR or Bud?
Are you planning on giving your hens any sun or outdoor time. I see in the pictures that there is a closed up door or window. Does it open? Chickens need sun to be healthy and happy.
With all those climbing and flying predators I'm worried that there is no room. I would consider capping it with something. Maybe pick up a piece of corrugated roofing for part and the rest with hardware cloth. Try www.zorotools.com for soem good prices. I find them to be considerably...
