It is not crowing. It is a very docile chicken. I do have an older hen that crows when she wants to come out, but no rooster.
I know that it has several roo traits, but it also has hen traits, and I think the saddles look rounded and but the hackles are a mix.
OK, here is an update. I felt better after the post by fivetoed, but today, when I took new pics, her feathers look to me like a cockerel, even though her face still looks female.
The brown bird's face looks like the white bird also pictured, but more male-looking feathers have appeared IMO...
I think I already know the answer to this but am in denial because I was sure this was a pullet up to this point. This is a barnyard mix chicken. She hatched around mid-February, putting her at around 11 weeks. She was the one I was sure was a hen, smaller, docile, nothing gave her away until...
I got the bird from eggs we hatched in my classroom, barnyard mix.
The bird is very docile, but its comb has started to look a tad pink. There are no siblings who resemble this bird, so it's hard to compare it with the others. It is about 2.5 weeks old. It is larger than the others, but the...
In the past, when I had more time, I used to feed a mash. I'll likely get yogurt today and tomorrow I'll make some oatmeal and try hiding it in there.
Thanks
Her stool looks normal and has been, but the three hens all have messy bottom feathers, so I'm confused. The 8 pullets I have all look great with no mess. It's a mystery to me. I saw on another thread about hiding oyster shell or powder in yogurt so I will try that. I have noticed that the...
I have 3 18-month-old hens. One of my hens is a Rhode Island White. She used to be a great layer but then her eggshells started getting soft, about 3 months ago. Now her eggshells are completely soft and squishy and she just leaves a mess in the box. I've been so busy I haven't had time to...
I wanted to give a little update for anyone this applies to. I hatched out seven welsh harlequin eggs, a light breed of duck, and 4 of 7 eggs pipped in the wrong end. They barely turned in this machine and the fact that they laid horizontally contributed to this issue. I wouldn't really...
I have a 20 austrlorp cockerel that I have raised organically but have not been able to sell so I'm going to cull him. 20 weeks is a fine age for his breed, yes? Going to make croq au vin. He won't be too tough, right?
If I'm feeding moistened mash, I use a glass pie dish. If its crumble, I use the standard chicken feeder. I feed the crumble when I'm out of town since its not a two or three time a day event like mash is.
Would someone be willing to tell me if my Holdereds silver drake that I hatched looks like he'll be a handsome bird conforming to the standards? - if possible.
He's 8 weeks and we're trying to decide who to keep to breed and for 4h (for my son) and who to sell
(For some reason the picture won't...
Yes, no crowing, no spurs and no matting behavior, though he does like to jockey for position with all of the pullets every morning, not with the one hen though. I'm going to try to sell him as a pair with my other Australorp point of lay asap. I'd hate for him to start crowing in my super...
I have a 16 week old Australorp who is growing some odd rooster-like tail feathers and I'm wondering if she might be a rooster? She was always a little ahead in size of the other Australorp chicks and she's definitely ahead in development in her comb and wattle, but sometimes that just happens...
Thanks! I felt compelled to help the three who pipped under the air sac and all went well. I found that once I had broken an air hole, their membrane got pretty dry and I had maximum humidity in the Brinsea. The one that I waited to help ended up dying. I'm still waiting to hear from Brinsea...
Thanks, I set my incubator for 28 as per directions sothe incubator knew when the period was up. Thank you for informing me that its OK to get the humidity really high after they've pipped. I put a wet rag in and I think it really helped.
I only had one with a slightly protruding navel in the end.
