    Unusual Broody Hatch

I have had three successful hatches under a broody in the past. I have never done anything special with the eggs, just collect a dozen, and pop them under the broody and wait. I wanted to share the story of my broody's latest hatch because I have never heard of chicken eggs taking over a month...

Do I have 7 little boys?!! And any guess how old they are? (9 pics)

I was guessing they were about 4 weeks old, but now I'm thinking that they might be younger than that. I was hoping to have some girls in there because my youngest layers are almost two. I had two layers that my broody hatched last summer but some predator got them Sat. night. The door wasn't...

Will a hen lay an egg while roosting? (at night)

When I went to open the coop up this morning I noticed the two chanteclers who are usually the first to rush out, were still inside. I went into the coop and found them pecking a what I thought was poop but upon closer inspection it looked like an egg yolk. There was no sign of either shells or...

Will a broody hen 'adopt' day old chicks?

Sorry if this has been covered but I could not find the answer in my searches. I have 5 day-old chicks coming this week and was/am planning on keeping them in a brooder in the house for a few weeks before moving them to the coop, (in their own space). As it turns out, one of my hens has gone...

How/where do you store your eggs?

Hi. I'm new to chickens and am so thankful for everyone who shares their stories and wisdom here. I am wondering how you store your eggs? I have 3 hens laying and 3 more to start laying in the next few months. So far I've been keeping my eggs in an paper carton on the counter and moving the...

A week or two of fertile eggs?

Hi, I just bought a pair of 1 year old Partridge Chantecler hens. They've been living with roosters so I believe their eggs should be fertile. Would it be reasonable to leave their eggs in the nest for a few days to see if one of them will set on them? Should I collect them first for a week or...

    My new hens?

Hi. I just bought a hen and 3 'chicks' and I'm not sure what they are. They're probably a mix but I believe they are wyandotte of some sort? Also there is one that seems to have a more pronounced comb that may be a cockeral but I'm not sure. Any thoughts would be very much appreciated, thanks!
