Hummm....I really do want a few silkies...a friend of mine has a bunch. It might be a good friend for my girl...Besides I love the way they look...looks like chickens wearing chaps.
Well its been a while so here is an update. Milton is doing MUCH MUCH better. She has all her feathers, for the first time ever since Ive gotten her. She has put on some weight and is pretty much acting like a normal chicken. Id love to put her back with the others but Im nervous. I might...
Well its been about a week since I put Milton into her new "room." Things are pretty good now. Shes actually beginning to grow some feathers on her back, which is a first since Ive gotten her. Also, shes starting to act like a normal chicken...clucking and acting happy as opposed to scared to...
I came home tonight and went up to cover the crate with a tarp and a padded picnic tablecloth. Since it was almost dark she was sleeping on the floor of the crate instead of in the box with the shavings. I kinda felt bad but know she will be warm enough for tonight.
The crate has chicken wire...
Alright! Milton is in her new digs and while its a little tight its better than getting beat up on. Two things I have to work on is the sleeping quarters and the flooring. The dog crate has wide spaced wiring across the bottom. I might use the shingle with shavings idea to help out her feet...
Okay...picked up the dog crate and she will go into that first thing tomorrow with water, pellets and corn.
The crate is only 2x3 so its a bit small. I still have to figure out something for her to sleep in at night that doesnt take up all the room.
Good idea with the tarp too. I think Im going to do the rubbermaid idea with a tarp for the nights. Its still not down to freezing here and this is more of a temporary fix till I have time to work something out. Perhaps a down and dirty tractor for the winter.
Im going to get the crate...
The crate is one of those very big wire ones that you put your dog in when people come to the house or you go out, not a dog house. Thats why Im thinking to take a rubbermaid container and cut a hole in the side, fill that with shavings and have that be the hen house.
Thanks for the dog crate idea...I cant believe I didnt think of it. Called a buddy of mine who has one that hes not using. If it held a 130lb lab I think it will hold one chicken. But what about the plastic floor of those things? Can they be taken out?
Now what to use for a little house for...
I think thats whats bugging me the most. She has been my "charity case" since day one. I quickly learned that she was getting picked on and therefore took special care of her.
I just dont know what to do. If I could build a super quick 1-2 chicken coop and small run I would in a heartbeat.
I have several chickens which I got on fathers day this year. From the beginning there was one girl, we named her "Milton" because we were told she was moulting. Well she wasnt. She was the bottom of the pecking order. To boot she's blind in at least one eye and cant really see much out of...
