Yes Cayuga Jane, one of my two has been laying for about 6 weeks and I'm getting nearly one every day. I'm going to put a camera in the coop and try to figure out which one is doing the laying...I know drakes supposedly don't really "quack" but I still feel I may have a quackin' male!!! LOL...
Oh, and no drake feather at 7 1/2 months. Cayuga Jane weighed in with the previous youtube vid and thinks they are both females...so I am just anxiously awaiting the other duck to start laying for confirmation :)
no concentric circles yet in any eggs. I have pictures and a youtube video as part of this thread. I'm just providing progress and updates :) My youtube vid isn't very good so I'll post another.
I soooo much want to believe that my larger, greener, quacking duck is actually a female. But, here is an update: I have been getting 1 egg a day on most days for 3 weeks...only one, never two, and I can never catch either of my two ducks laying an egg. The suspected male has ceased mating...
Yay!!!! Thanks for weighing in!!! The one I thought was a male is substantially more green, bigger, thicker neck that she puffs out. I'm glad she is all show :)
Okay, I just posted a YouTube video...not a good one for viewing them but I can post pics for that. My "suspect" drake is the very loud quack that sounds like he is laughing..."ha. ha, ha" and the simple quack is the smaller, less green female. They are 7 months old, no eggs, no drake feather...
Hi everyone,
Here's my update on Pyrtle and Samantha, 23 week old Cayuga ducks. Pyrtle (the suspected male) is more green and quite a bit larger than Samantha. Pyrtle did not quack for nearly 3 months and still does not quack nearly as much as Samantha...but when "he" does, it is boisterous...
I have googled the vocalizations...and I thought I had a male given what I heard...raspy grunts and mumblings...but now he does a full-on quack every now and then. For the most part , he.is very quiet especially compared to the other duck. He apoears to "mate" the other duck since 3 mos. old and...
Just to be clear, when I use the description of raspy, or hoarse...I'm still referring to a full-on quack, not raspy mutterings. He/she has a slightly different tone than the smaller duck that I'm referring to as a "she". The female quacks a lot and the quack is slightly higher pitched...
They both have green on their heads but the smaller duck's has less. The greener duck's quack is lower and huskier...it is not a "rasp" that people often describe for drakes. From what I have read, drakes don't quack....but what if they are alarmed? what if someone picks up their duck friend...
I've certainly been fooled before. My avatar is a super cute, strange! bantam mottled cochin. She would lay on her back for belly scratches as a chick, became a little aggressive with pecking, still likes to jump on my back and peck me, got a red comb early on, CROWED...and then started laying...
Hello Miss Lydia,!"he" is however, vocalizing more in the last month than previously. "he is getting so green and beautiful. The female has a lot of color too which isn't showing up as well in this photo but still quite a bit less than the "male".
Hello Miss Lydia,
I inspected the "suspect...
I just got back into town after being gone for a week....I have great petsitters :) Video coming this weekend of their quacks. I noticed something odd with my suspect drake tonight. They have a small 125 gal. koi pond liner available to them always but I was also filling a kiddie pool tonight...
I'm both excited and mortified! He is already gorgeous but of course I ordered females. I only have the 2 ducks and 5 hens. I read about the issues with drakes mating hens and one drake to one duck over-mating. Someone on this site mentioned that 1 drake and 1 duck can be okay as well....so, I...
Thank you for your quick reply! I will try to get a video. The potentially confused duck is the only one that mounts and he/she pulls the neck feathers of the other duck, albeit really gently. The he/she had been very quiet up until about 3 months old (they are 4 mos. now) but now quacks more...
Hello all,
I got my first Cayuga ducks this spring and at 3 1/2 months they appear to be mating. I have read all about the difference of the drake and duck vocalizations and listened to youtube videos. Although the apparent drake is a bit more raspy and doesn't quack as often, when he does it...
