    Installing an apron around the perimeter should be sufficient but it would need to be of something other than chicken wire. Coons and fox can tear through it. Use welded wire fencing or hardware cloth. I'd probably go for 24" out, too.

    How old are the kids? I grew up with electric fencing. Sure, I got zapped a few times (not counting all the times we touched it on a dare) but I wasn't scarred for life or anything.
