I skin my layer cocks. It seems faster and easier to skin on the younger birds. I just did mine at 3 1/2 and 4 Mo old. once they get older, they toughen up. Older birds I also skin for chicken noodles, but they do seem to be tougher to skin. and they certainly don't fry up worth a darn. Meat is...
Thank you and very glad you enjoyed these posts. You are right , we have trolls in everything. They are cowards as far as I am concerned. They like to spout off on everything they know nothing about just to try and cause a stir. Shall we feed them when they go hungry?? I'm thinking NOT unless...
Yes you will have cockerels to spare! goes with the territory of raising chicks. so far this summer out of 30 chicks hatched/raised -14 are/were roosters. Just finished the last 4-4 months old yesterday. Last hen hatched 5 on 8/2. 2 for sure are Roos. so they won't go to freezer for awhile yet...
That was interesting. It could work. they seem happy with it. :) I probably would need instructions on how to put it together. I just skinned mine. have a few more to do and will skin them as well. I do like having the cone. It does good at holding them there.. May get another one for next...
That is a unique looking bird. Rather pretty too. So it is an EE x ?. extra toes. looks meaty. I don't mind the crowing. mine are just now 16 weeks old and have done 6 so far with 3-4 more to do. I bought a Medium Kill cone. It helped me. :) I have never tried chicken jerky. will have to try...
I might just stick with my Buff's, Rocks, and EE's. Takes longer to grow, but they sure are pretty to watch. I really like looking at some silver laced Wyandotts and Black/copper marans without the leg feathers. Oh and those speckled Sussex are beautiful... I just love color...Next spring, I...
I had heard that before about them breaking down and not mating, so always wondered how they bred them. Interesting..Guess that is why it is a secret of which birds they used. :)
We have always removed the heads. I saw the plucker video on u-tube and saw the heads on chickens as they ran through the plucker. did't know they did it that way. Grandma always removed the heads, then let the chickens on the ground and headless chickens would run in circles ,Jump up and down...
How on Earth do you even breed these birds if they grow so fast and break down from weight?? I like the idea of a faster larger bird, but certainly wouldn't want to waste any time and them get too big and break down on me.. All I can say is WOW!!
That's pretty interesting! And You attached it to the Table somehow... I have cats, none live in the house, so don't have a litter container. do have weed killer jugs, but won't use those. Fill me in a little on your set up. :) Ideas are appreciated..
Holy Smokes! That is some big young birds! None of mine are that big. My Barred rock rooster is around 8-9 lbs, the biggest chicken I have. others around 4-5 lbs live weight. Small cones it said for banty's, mine are bigger than a Banty, but not huge birds. I'll have to get my baby scale out and...
Do you use a cone? if so what size for the Cornish cross's? I just ordered a medium cone, should be here today/tomorrow. should help me some. When I get rich enough, I'll try to get a chicken plucker. those look pretty good to have. Then maybe I will hatch amore birds and be able to process more...
I have 6-7 standing by outside. getting ready to do them. I am just trying to make up my mind on which 2- I want to keep. They are hitting 4 months old. some chasing the girls already. 1 EE has been trying since he was 3 months old. Their crows are sounding better and not so crackly. Our closest...
Well, I did some more checking, and Umm, the featherman I saw was ,well, expensive. Great for a ton of birds. just not in my budget at this time. I'll have to do by hand or something much less expensive. Maybe a table top type plucker. around $400.00. Going to have to hatch and process more...
Thank you. I did go watch some videos on chicken pluckers. It does sound a bit expensive to even build one of the whizzbang, and I am not really too mechanical. I think I can figure out how to do the cone though. I'll look around to see what may be useable for that. I like the Featherman...
What do you feel is the best time/age to butcher for frying chickens. Older chickens get so tough and make good for chicken noodles. I tried frying older chickens many moons ago and that ended like bricks. looked good and smelled good, couldn't bite them. I know some are bred to grow out fast...
