Congrats on first hatch.
We got our first hatch of 5 almost 7 weeks ago from Colleen, our year old GLW.
She has nurtured all 5 she hatched to this point and dropped her first egg yesterday since going broody, the same day that we heard the first crow coming from the babies. They are in an...
Been keeping a daily log since October and March was our best month so far. Average for the month was 23.xxx per day from 32 birds. At this point I am fairly satisfied with 75% rate. Still have to root out the intermittant egg eater in a mixed group of 10 ladies and a roo which should bump it up...
We have only had them for 2 months and were laying when we got them. It is a mixed flock of 2 BRs, 2 Calif. Leghorns, 2 Buff Orps, a Speckled Sussex, a RSL, a Brahma Buff and a mixed breed itty-bitty girl.
I just started weighing eggs the first of the month and one of the BRs has been laying...
We have 10 layers and 22 pullets that are coming online slowly but surely. Getting 6 a day from the layers and the pullet pen is giving 4 a day. We did have a 12 egg day last week. Size between the 2 pens range from 33 gram first eggs to 73 gram whoppers from the layer pen. There is quite a bit...
I would be inclined to believe that your girls may be hoodwinking you. Someone decided that where you found the eggs was a good spot and others followed suit.
4/10 from the adult pen and the youngsters are getting started as we were 4/23 in that pen including a lovely little 33 gram from one of them. Pretty sure that was another first egg for someone in that pen. Still waiting for a sign that the lone EE in that pen is laying.
Total 8/33 and rising...
A second cockerel showed himself over the last couple days in our mixed flock 13 of which we had thought there was only Jimmy.
Time to add another pen and split the 34 ladies out amongst the 3 fellas.
After 3 weeks of settling in together, the 11 hens in the adult pen are getting regular...
6 of 12 daily in 1 pen of hens and the pen of 23 pullets have just started with first eggs on consecutive days from 2 of them.
The 12 hens are 2 groups of 6 that we put with a 9 month old cockerel, have settled in and are becoming regular. A week ago it was only 3 a day from them so we are happy.
I had a 17 year old make an interesting observation.
Since it is practically all yolk, that was almost a double yolk in a full-sized shell.
It came out of a pen of adult birds but it was suggested that it could be a First egg. After thinking about it, I am inclined to agree with the kid.
Either...
This is what I found in one of the nest boxes this morning. It was buried deep in pine shavings and straw and I was more than a little surprised to even find it while digging around for eggs.
