We don't get much snow. Usually we get ice masquerading as snow. The coop is elevated 12" off the ground as well. The door opening is a little short, but that shouldn't be a problem since I'll be stepping up/down to enter/exit. I figured I'd have the door open out to allow more room in the coop...
HA! Next on the list is the people door. The plans just have plywood attached to the coop with hinges and blocks of wood. I want to build something better than that; esp. since the door will be facing the road. So now I'm doing searches for "how to build a shed door." :)
Thanks. The idea is that it will match the house colors since it's in the front part of my property. You can actually see the house window through the left coop window in the photo.
Here's the final product :)
The interesting part was trying to figure out how to shim it so the trim pieces would lay flat since the nailing fin caused them to rock. I tried extra flashing tape first, but even after two extra layers on the tape not covered by the fin, it still wasn't completely...
I have to make another run to the hardware store for more lumber before I can finish windows. I'll post a photo to this thread once I have the trim up.
At this point, that's what I'm trying to figure out. Do you use thinner trim boards that fit inside the channel and leave the window protruding, or do I use trim boards that are wider than the channel, so it covers it completely. Is one better than the other, or just a matter of preference? I've...
This sounds like a good plan! However, I've already installed them now (got them all in yesterday). I'm pretty sure it would take me a lot longer to uninstall them without messing something up in the process. I'd do things different next time, knowing what I know now!
I think I'm stuck with the protruding window situation at this point since I've already installed the window and taped all around it (I didn't realize that stuff was so sticky!). If it sticks out past the trim pieces, will that cause any problems?
What I've learned recently (Internet searching) is that this type of window, with a nailing fin and j-channel, is designed to be installed with vinyl siding. The window is installed to the plywood sheeting via the nailing fin, then the vinyl siding is installed against the window frame under the...
I've installed the windows, and now I'm trying to figure out the best way to trim them out. Would it be better to try to fit the brickmold into the j-channel, or to use 2x4s, which would cover the j-channel and just leave the channel empty under it? I hope that makes sense
Thanks for the response. The siding is smart siding and it's attached directly to the framing (no plywood sheeting). I put it up before the roof. The hurricane ties for the rafters are attached over the siding, so removing the siding really isn't feasible; not to mention it's just me working on...
First, a disclaimer :) I'm a first-time coop builder and have very little experience building anything like a coop.
I'm building a 6x10 coop based on plans I purchased. I'm learning a lot from this build, including that novice-friendly doesn't always mean what you hope it means. I'm following...
