It sounds like maybe his lungs filled up with fluid? With how rapid the onset was, I’d say it was something internal and not contagious. But I’m just guessing. Does your vet do necropsies? That would be the only way to know for certain.

It sounds like a respiratory infection like casportpony said. So there isn’t much else to do but give him antibiotics and hope it works.
