We're not eating chicken right now, but it's because we just had a hen die (our Jersey Giant girl), probably from the heat, and we're still "in shock". It was our first flock death, and cooking chicken is just too similar to "everything".
While I fricken love bacon cheeseburgers, we've been...
Yup!!! I've been reading everything I could ever since my Sweetie said, "Maybe we should think about getting a rooster again."
How is the crow with your cochin? A little quieter than a full size roo? We're fine with crowing, and so are the neighbors (*they* have roosters), I'd just like...
Awww, thanks.
It happens -- he was a cuddle bug (hand raised, well loved chicks in our bathroom), then the hormones kicked in. We tried, but as new chicken keepers, he had our number, and I could never regain the upper hand.
It took months, but I found him a great farm, with an experienced...
The gift from my first rooster.

Believe me, I'm thinking *hard* about getting a new little fella ....... Cochins have a great reputation, but at 5 months, it's still way too early to tell about his temperment.
Silly bantam cochin question: I have full size hens -- would he be able to roost with them, or would he need a lower...
I started reading this post because I've been contemplating trying again with a rooster. There's some bantam cochin cockerels (about 5 months old) close by, free, adorable (of course!), and I was curious if our flock and family was ready yet.
We'll give it a few more weeks. You all have been...
People are pretty intense about their chickens! Last summer, my Sweetie and I had a few big arguments about re-homing our aggressive roo that ended with one of us sleeping on the sofa!
I'd been sliced down the nose, and stalked all summer, but it finally took the rooster flying into the my...
