Ours was a first timer, too. We let her sit on some of our own eggs for a week before I got my ordered eggs to switch.
It was during that week that we moved her to her "apartment" in a large dog crate inside the coop area. It took her a day or two to get used to that. At first, she...
I also wanted to let you all know that Momma Penny laid an egg when the babies were exactly 4 weeks old. She now spends very little time with them. She has rejoined the other hens and they roam the yard. The babies seem to instinctively stay a little closer to home. They can usually be found...
I wanted to update for any who are interested. We had a great hatch. Unfortunately, we got mostly roosters. Darn.
But they are loads of fun to watch. I have been trying to get some video of the little guys sparing! It is hilarious!
They were born on March 6th.
Here are some pics of...
I was specifically talking about the last couple of days or DuRinG the hatch. If the eggs have a ways to go, then you can probably candle without much damage. I have read that people have noticed higher hatch rates when they don't candle, but who knows.
Just don't lift the broody while eggs...
All the chicks are so so so cute!!! I love watching our babies with their momma. She went from being a broody pancake, to being a broody tent. Isn't it fun!!!!
I wanted to say to those with a hatch going on that you might want to be careful about lifting the broody off the nest. Melissa was...

Someone asked a similar question earlier in this thread. If the chicks hatch, it varies for each bird. They will care for the chicks for a few weeks or more and then go back to laying.
As for if the eggs don't hatch? Well, I don't know. I have read about ways to "un-broody" your...

How WONDERFUL!!!!!
They are sooooo cute!!!
They seem so big compared to my chicken babies. And they are out following her around!!!!!
I think my hen would love to go out to range, but with all the other hens and the dog, we will wait a week or two.
Congratulations!!!!
I took the last 2 eggs out of the nest this morning. One had died before it completed development, and the other was fully developed, but didn't hatch. I may have messed up that one when I started messing with chicks and lifting the hen.
Anyway, now that the eggs are gone, the broody has...

I'd be hatin' that hen, too. They are animals. They don't reason, they funtion on instinct, and it isn't always perfect.
I hope she gets some chicks hatched for you!
Okay, I have the videos uploaded. Wanna see!!!!!
There are 5 videos. I don't have any software on this computer to splice them together. Sorry. I do recommend that you watch all 5. They show a chick hatching right next to momma.
The hen you hear making all sorts of noise in the background...
We have chicks!!!!! :
We have 6 chicks and 4 more pips that I hope will hatch. There are two eggs that have not pipped. Today is day 21.
We had:

Aaaahhhhh!!!! We have pips and peeps!!! I am sooooo eggsited!!
Taking my kids to their class! When we return, we expect a few chicks..
Broody got up to eat and we saw at least 4 or 5 eggs that had pipped!!!
OMg!!! I wish we didn't have to go, but it is probably best as we would be glued...
