Can any of you guys come over to this thread and weigh in on whether these muscovies are male or female? The poster has asked several times over the last couple months and has gotten no definitive answer, and now someone has told them they are females and are "lame ducks" and "lesbio" whatever...
I don't think it was any sort of disease because all the other birds, including the other ducks, are fine. So it was either an inability to handle the cold or something went wrong internally, I think :(
None. Both of them fine one day, coming out to greet me in the run, eating and drinking fine, and then dead the next morning. No wounds, not a single feather out of place.
Well, today I lost Fudge :hit I have no clue what happened, just found him dead just like Praline. Perhaps they hit the age where genetic defects kick in, like sometimes happens with chickens. All the other birds are fine, including the waterfowl. It was just those two. So I guess I'll just let...
Well, I have a line on some blue pied and chocolate pied females. I may be able to get them this Tuesday, which would be great. The blue is older and hatched a clutch this fall, and the chocolate is about Fudge's age and about ready to start laying. So fingers crossed, he'll have some...
I have welsh harlequins too, but they don't accept him. For that matter, Lacie isn't sure of him either. She doesn't really know what to do about him and runs away when he gets too close. She's getting a mate this year too. She was supposed to have come with a gander when I got her two years ago...
I lost Praline :hit I'm not sure what happened, but she was dead in the coop this morning. I don't think she was a very hardy bird and she was having trouble handling the cold weather. So now I've only got poor Fudge, who follows my lone goose around. Sigh. Guess I better get some hatching eggs...
Oh I never did update on Praline's situation. After a few days in the with the chicks and cemanis she was confident enough to go back out with Fudge in the main flock and they have blended in nicely. Everyone seems to tolerate each other and they no longer try to wander off when they are free...
Bunny so sorry that Kream is missing :hugs
I haven't been able to fence off a section of the coop yet, hopefully tomorrow, but Praline is doing much better. She's much more alert and is eating much better. She is putting some weight back on thank goodness, and has more fight in her when I pick...
Thanks for the input guys! I'm going to try to rustle up some fencing and another heated waterer and see what I can do as far as making them their own little area in the coop.
He's roughly six months old, and no, there wouldn't really be anywhere for them to go if he tried to get them. It's an 8x8 coop, which is what makes me nervous. The chicks are about 5 and 6 weeks old at this point, so not so big.
Does anyone know how drakes do with chicks? As in, chicken chicks? Praline, my duck, has just not been doing well with all the birds in the main coop. The ducks were bullying her away from food and water and she's very timid of the chickens. It got to the point where she wouldn't eat in the main...
It's been rough few days over here, with a huge loss, a rescue, and a power outage. I have just lost my last remaining grandparent, my grandmother, two weeks after I lost my grandfather. I know that this is not an uncommon thing for people who have lived together so long and suddenly one is...
Well good luck, I think it would be fine if you left it with the silkies. Be careful taking it anywhere, because at this point, keeping it away from heat and humidity is what will cause the most problems. Try to keep it warm.
I wouldn't put the egg with a non-broody duck. If the silkies are broody then go ahead and put it under them. Was the mother attacking the egg for sure or do you think she was trying to go after you to protect her nest and got the egg instead?
It's too bad you don't have an incubator. Are the silkies broody? It really does need to be in a warm, humid area so it doesn't really become shrink wrapped. You might want to put it back with its mother so that it stays warm and humid.
Apply very gentle pressure with a dry paper towel to the bleeding area and it should stop. I've had to do this before too, and it's always worked for me :)
I don't think it's shrink wrapped. When the membrane dries out you can't see the veins like that. Plus those veins are a sign that it's not near ready to come out yet :)
