Honestly, you wouldnt be able to tell much difference unless I took straight-on butt-shots pre and post trim, LOL. On the hen, we pluck the feathers just above the vent. On the rooster, we pluck and/or trim the feathers below the vent. That makes sense when you think of how they mate and...
Though I was really surprised at the new Skye, I really like it! Your hen is beautiful, Julie. Bliss, good to know about the brown tint thing.
Crystal, are these from my bunch? love to see pics!
Now, that would be cool, to breed a Patchwork Orpington who bred true. Thanks for the compliments. Skye came from Jim Cox, back when he still had his birds. I sent him the link so he could see his granddaugher.
Thanks! I should have eggs later on, but just today, we trimmed/plucked some of the butt fluff on Suede and the ladies because I only got 3 fertile eggs out of 18 we set ten days ago. I want to see if that helps then we'll be back in business. These Orps have very dense fluff and that can make...
We are very proud of Suede. Tom adores him. That big guy is just a terrific rooster. He acts concerned when we do things to his women, but he's never charged at all. We always talk to him and show him that his girls are okay and he seems satisfied with that.
Both Skye and Velvet were very typey, but Velvet just had a goofy personality that always made me laugh. Skye is more aloof than Velvet was. You should have heard Skye yell when Tom went to get her for her fluff trim--good thing Suede isn't the human-aggressive type or Tom would have had to...
Hmm, interesting theory. It's been so long, I wish I could remember. I know that Velvet feathered in very fast as a chick, but she was in the middle of a terrible molt when she developed sour crop and passed on, so I didnt see what hers would have come in like.
Im thinking she feathered in pretty quickly, Charlie, but I couldn't swear to it. I know that one of my younger blues feathered in quite slowly like a cockerel. Why do you ask?
Marlon, I was just going to say how much I miss seeing Velvet around here. MissP, I agree about the age thing. Skye is just the best she's ever been, IMO. You can see such a difference between her and the much younger girls, who are about 7 mths old.
Thanks, Julie. She sure did surprise me, changing color like that. Very cool! BTW, Julie, when I trimmed butt fluff today, OMGosh, Skye is so massively fluffy, no wonder her eggs werent fertile! She is my most typey Blue Orp girl.
You remember my Skye, Suede's older wife? Well, Skye molted and came in a much different shade of blue...plus now, she's positively variegated! She's a new breed called a "patchwork quilt Orpington", LOL. She's actually darker than the pic shows, but you can see her unusual pattern. The last pic...
