Help! 11 degrees ºF outside and need some water!

Well, I think that's the most important point right there. I had to Google Icelandics because I have never seen any, but it sounds like they were bred for over a 1000 years to survive the harsh winters of Iceland. "Norse settlers brought their home flocks to Iceland in the ninth century. For...

Help! 11 degrees ºF outside and need some water!

First of all, welcome to the BYC forums :welcome What you say is very interesting, but runs contra to everything I have been told. I know wild birds find ways to winter over in the snow, but I wonder how our domesticated chickens could survive. Is your success due to the breed(s) of chicken you...

Help! 11 degrees ºF outside and need some water!

I don't have any roosters, yet, but I found this post interesting. I understand the situation with open bowls or containers and the rooster would dip its wattle in the water which could lead to frostbite, but would the old fashioned metal founts with a much smaller area for water pose a problem...

You can still get incandescent bulbs at places like Menards, but they cost a lot more now than they used to back in the day. I used to buy a 4 pack of 60 watt incandescent bulbs for 88 cents at Walmart not that many years ago. Now, if/when you can find incandescent bulbs at places like Menards...

Help! 11 degrees ºF outside and need some water!

I have heard of these too. The instructions say to use an old fashioned incandescent bulb (40 watt or 60 watt) which I like because they are easy to replace when they burn out, which they will do. I like this design because it has metal all the way around the cookie tin - no plastic to burn...

Help! 11 degrees ºF outside and need some water!

Very true. They manage to survive somehow. But I do think having fresh water is a better option for the chickens and puts less stress on them. Nobody I know that raises chickens has every suggested just letting them eat snow. I wonder how people kept water for their chickens before electricity...

Help! 11 degrees ºF outside and need some water!

This is my first winter with laying hens, but I too went with the old style metal waterer with heater metal base. So far, with temps down to 2F at night, the water has not frozen on the heater metal base. I have been thinking about buying a heated dog dish as a backup for my metal waterer. I'll...
