Hey, Lazy Gardner! It's been a LONG time! I see the rooster you got from me is still on your profile picture. How's everything going? I've got only Silkies, right now-8 of them & my oldest hen, Nellie (2.5 years old) is sitting on 4 eggs. She's gone broody every other month for the past 2 years...
Hi! Speaking of setting eggs...my white Silkie from last spring is sitting on her FIFTH clutch! She goes broody every other month like clockwork. She's a great broody & good mom. I don't have a rooster & get fertile Silkie eggs from someone who does. I have sold all of her surrogate chicks...
I have a Silkie who will be a year old in May & she's gone broody three times already. The first time was October (at about 5 months) but I was able to break her. The second time was November & I wasn't able to break her, so I bought some fertile eggs, just to give her something to do. I set her...
Thanks! It is exciting! I did the same thing my first summer with chickens & got a prefab tractor which said would hold 6-8 chickens. No way! Bantams, MAYBE! It is also falling apart & I think it will be in the burn pile this spring.:(
Sorry to change the subject from all this rat talk but I'm pretty excited! Nellie's gone broody again! So I got her 5 fertile Silkie eggs-projected hatch date: March 15th.
Yes, they are in a plastic tote, now, with a light. It was so neat watching the interaction between them but it seemed like she was ready to go back outside. There are two of them.
I love how Silkie chicks just get fluffier as they grow!!:)
How's everyone faring in the storm? Last night, was the baby Silkies first night alone. They were QUITE vocal from the time that had been their usual bedtime under mom around 7:30-8pm. I went to bed at 10pm & they were STILL going! Not sure what time they finally quieted down-probably just...
I think only one of my girls actually came outside & she tried to fly over it but it was my little black Silkie, Mavis & we all know how well Silkies fly. But at least she tried. She's so cute! The rest of them stayed inside but all of them did lay an egg-5, today!:)
I don't think I mentioned in this thread that I have a persistently broody Silkie & decided to put some fertile eggs under her: 3 Silkie & 2 Polish. Hatch date is set for New Years. I'll keep you posted & of course pictures!:)
I've had good luck finding homes for my roos on the local chicken FB pages. It seems like most of the people on there have their chickens for pets. Good luck!
