Thank you, it was for the best because I figured something out. Did you get your chickens from a hatchery/feed store/TSC or from an individual breeder? If you got them from a breeder, DO NOT LET THEM HATCH THEIR OWN EGGS!!!! I believe this is my problem and that my chick was inbred. I got mine...
Pretty sure he is dying. He is having trouble breathing and has always had trouble drinking water. He is not strong enough to lift his head and has gotten to the point where he can't put his feet under himself. It is sad but life. :hit
Now that I have time to sit down and type,
He has been sleeping but this morning when I checked on him he was a little more active. If we put chick feed next to him he will peck at it. When we give him water he jerks his head away. I have some left over waternelon that I will feed him when I...
So we had something bad happen. Our guess is that the chick went to get food they is right beside the box for him. Then, another chicken came and pecked him in the head. It looks pretty bad, but our friend/vet said that it would heal. It was fresh and we put Neosporin on it. He/she is tough...
I will leave them, by the way, 2 questions:
1. I think egg 2 has a pip in it, could the new chick or mom possibly have pecked it? You don't have to answer this one, I will know in the morning.
2. Could the mom abandon the chick if I touch him?
If a second chick hatches, I decided to name it...
Still no pips :(
Just kidding, I finally got a chick today! At the moment, since he is the only chick, his name is Uno, or one in Spanish. I love him and the hen is doing a great job! I'll post pics and keep you updated on him in the coming days and later. Thanks everyone for helping!
Ok, if none of her eggs hatch I will give her some more eggs. If she gets off them I have another broody sitting on golf balls. I plan to hatch a friend's Rhode Island Red eggs because she needs more chickens since hers are old. I still have hope since they were doing so good. :fl
Question 1: Yes, I've seen veining and movement. Now I wish I would have waited and candled later in the day.
Question 2: I did, If these don't hatch I will hatch eggs for someone else. I will give them till they are 26 or 27 days old, I am in no hurry.
This is day 18 candling results. I guess we'll just have to see how many hatch over the weekend. I put chick feed down low and I hung the layer feed up high. Is there anything else I should do before they arrive?
I will post candling pics tonight! Yesterday she cracked another egg and it disappeared, never to be found again. I'm not sure what happened with it but I didn't find any blood so maybe something took it? Not sure but hope that some chicks hatch. :jumpy
