Finch temperaments are really hard to predict. I was not sure how this group would work out, but they are doing well. Zebra finch are often very territorial and not the best for mixed flocks. Having just one, he seems to stay well behaved so his friends dont exclude him. I wouldn't add another...
I bought some new finches recently to keep my old 7 yr old society finch (center) company.
I think it's clear from this picture how well they have all bonded together! They all sleep in the same nest together and preen each other. There are two new society finches, a zebra finch, and a spice...
Yes... hand-raised cockatiels or budgies, ringneck doves or pigeons are all friendlier birds. Budgies from a pet store much less so though. Look for well-socialized birds.
They are normally pets to watch and not touch.
I have a society finch who is 7.5 who trusts me, will come to me to see what I'm up to and eat from my hand. It's a bond forged through a long time of letting him out in the house and letting him choose to interact without being pushed. He doesn't...
Zebras may attack and bloody them. Not that all do... but every time I have tried to house both species in a cage, even a very large one, the zebras would be very hostile towards them.
Societies may get attacked, I never mix those species.
If you do more zebras, add four and not two and keep sexes equal. Four birds will fight a lot, six becomes a flock where nobody can bully anyone else too much.
All mine eat pellets as their daily base diet, and did not resist them from the first try, though my parakeets refuse them thoroughly. I use Lafeber canary pellets for them all.
I usually have to spray the nozzle with a spray bottle a few times with new birds to get them to start pecking it for water but they figure it out. I have finches, budgies, quail and pigeons trained to bottles and it's so clean, my birds would fill the little drinker tubes with food residue...
I use large glass hamster bottles for all my birds to guarantee clean water. I also used to use those seed hoppers that sit outside the cage until most of my birds started using them to sleep in and filling the food tray with poop... so I use a variety of dishes now and try to position them low...
