I started a thread on some of my chicks. Same hatch date as my HAL chicks.

This blue pullet is a Silverudd’s from the July HAL.
The black rooster (rear left) and Legbar pullet (bottom right) are also July HAL...
I’m going to recruit my daughter tomorrow for help replacing leg bands and taking pictures. Of the 6 HAL chicks I have 3 Legbar Pullets, 1 Legbar rooster, 1 Silverudd’s pullet, 1 Silverudd’s rooster.
Of the 10 Hoover’s Hatchery chicks I have 6 definite pullets: 2 Olive eggers, 3 Easter Eggers...
I don’t know for sure. 😢 I’m not giving up hope they’re pullets until I know for 100%. Out of the 14 June HAL chicks I kept 6 and gave away 8 definite cockerels. Two of those 6 are also cockerels (one known, one surprise). Everything about them says pullet except for the darker red coming in on...
Pics! I’d love to see what she looks like.
I have two BYM June HAL with blue in them. I lost track of what eggs they came from awhile ago. Based on their coloring I think they’re from the seller with a blue laced red Wyandotte rooster over Olive Egger hen (Legbar x Welsummer). The bird with...
When all you want to do it take pictures of your July HAL chicks but you have an overly friendly BCM from your June HAL….
What I was actually trying to photograph. 🤣 The size difference between the Hoover’s Easter Eggers and my local hatched Silverudd’s. Those Hoover’s gals are growing at an...
Excellent news! Sorry about the jerk hen but you’ve got a good handle, and plan, on it.
Excessive or unreasonable aggression is my line in the sand with our farm animals. It keeps things simple and safe. It’s applied to horses, goats, pigs, and poultry.
I’m loving all the updates on HAL chicks! They all look adorable.
No news here. I think I identified another Hoover’s chick as their Midnight Majesty Marans. Sexlinked so definitely a little pullet. She should lay terracotta colored eggs +/- speckles. Nice addition to any egg basket.
Here are...
My little helper spent time catching grasshoppers for the chickens. No wonder she is their favorite.
They only get to be out when I’m sitting with them. Or I can keep a close eye on them from another part of the yard. I don’t think I’ve ever had such excellent foragers! It’s so fun to watch them.
Some people on the Hoover’s hatchery Facebook group say their Easter or Olive eggers started laying at 16-18 weeks. That’s the last week of October at the very soonest. The good news is they also report these birds are decent winter layers. Even without supplemental lights. Hooray! :celebrate
They’re beautiful! All pullets would be excellent. 🤞
From the July HAL chicks I have 4 Legbars (3 pullets,1 rooster) and 2 Silverudd’s (1 pullet, 1 rooster) remaining.
Then the 10 Hoover’s chicks with the same hatch date. At 5 weeks I believe 2 are Olive eggers. The rest, I think, are Easter...
Good to know you can be opted out of crested. No plans to place an order anytime soon. But I might soften when our “babies” have grown out fully. 🤣
I do plan on a February order from Freedom Ranger hatchery for New Hampshires. There are some very intriguing threads on that line of birds in the...
Oh, snap! That's a bummer about the duplicates. I love the gamble of ordering assorted chicks. Sometimes its not the greatest but they've always grown on me eventually. Yours sure are cute! I'm glad they traveled well and all arrived alive.
Good to know about the polish in the exotic...
I browsed their Rare section. In addition to the ones you mentioned I’d hope for Exchequer Leghorn, Blue or Splash Cochin, and chocolate Orpington. I can’t wait see what you get today.
I’m a bit late in responding but I didn’t want to miss offering my condolences. You tried everything with this little one. Sometimes they just aren’t meant for this world. 😥 I’m so sorry she didn’t make it.
I spent a lot of time sorting out who’s who amongst my Hoover’s chipmunk chicks. With 8 of them similarly colored to each other and the Legbar chicks I couldn’t keep them straight.
Between comb type, leg color, how they’re feathering out, a couple leg bands I can now identify 8 from each other...
Yes, dry with something before putting back in the incubator. Pretty sure I used a paper towel. They’re so little and no extra laundry for me. 🤣 Let me know how it goes.
