The bird flu made restrictions in the Netherlands: all hobbyists with poultry have to coop them up in a coop/run now to avoid contact with wild birds. My run is big enough to keep 5 small and 3 bigger bantams (15m2) inside if necessary, but I let them free range a few hours each day if...

Katrientjes feathers look great again (after moult). Only her tail feathers need to grow a bit more. More pot visitors. Black completed her moult. Gin who is lower in rank is waiting for her turn. We ate cheese fondue yesterday, they love to pick a little from the cheese crest on the bottom.

Yesterday I gathered all small pavers we had laying in different places. It was enough to fix a line of pavers where used to be hwc. Because the hwc in the ground rusted I thought it would be safer if the chickens cant scratch here. Looks/is a lot better than the rabbit fences.

I intend to replace the rabbit fences with pavers on the spot/line where the hwc rusted away. We have a few pavers (10 x 10 cm) in stock from another project. Buying extra only cost a few euro’s. This is better for a more permanent solution to be sure the chickens wont hurt their feet. We made...

Today was chicken run labour day. HWC broken When we build the gazebo / party run, we thought to be clever to put part of the 1/2 “ hardware cloth in the ground. This would prevent predators from digging under the fence. Ten years later, we realized we'd made the wrong choice. The wire mesh...

My 3 oldies. Black and Pearl in front, Ini mini in the back. Kraai and Katrientje. Katrientje (Red) is moulting now. Its the time of the year the chickens start moulting and egg production drops. I just have been reading a great article on Omlet coops...

A day of many treats and surprises. 1 This morning I noticed a corner of the bread was moldy. The rest was still okay, and the chickens were very happy with it. 2 I had to leave early today and didn’t even finish half of my musli with yogurt breakfast. When I got home this afternoon the girls...

My chickens enjoy a siesta under the contorted hazel. The weather is great today and I hear purring sounds every now and then. 💚 20°C, almost no clouds, barely any wind. A very quiet and peaceful Sunday afternoon, typing this. The diy carwash behind our neighbours garden, spoiled it a bit...

I found the missing eggs today. They were in the coop underneath the poop tray. Why do we make nest-boxes for our chickens if they don’t need them. 😜

Thanks. Do you refer to the hollyhock? They were near the parking for a restaurant with an astonishing view. The hollyhock looks strange bc it almost finished blooming. Someone probably planted some seeds. I never saw them in nature.

It’s been ages since my last post. As you may have read elsewhere my hb and I have been away on a vacation after the neighbours got back. I was their turn to look after my ‘hateful’ 8. This time they even knew how to discourage a broody and were very pleased with 4 eggs on most days. We...

Update with a gif of my flock made from a short video to start with. Some info is posted in Shads thread too. Amrocks with black spots on their combs I noticed the bigger Amrocks are panting a lot more in hot weather than the slim Dutch. The Amrocks are getting smarter and are the first to lay...

We had 2 so called tropical days with temps around 33°C . My hens decided the nestbox was too hot. I dont blame them for not wanting to get roosted. The nestbox in the playhouse and the large nestbox in the run are much better in sunny hot weather. It seemed Black needed to lay an egg when I was...

Pearl went to the neighbours today. Maybe to see if there were any strawberries left for her. Didn’t count on the dog, who immediately came in action to play with the funny creature from next door. Pearl didn’t need much time to fly back to the coop. 🤣 🚀 Probably she won’t go there again for a...

Black, Katrientje, Kraai and Ini mini. Cleaned it. The gland was slightly red. Several feathers came loose when I cleaned it. Ini mini was not amused. After spraying with a wound disinfection she was glad I let her go.

Thanks for attempt to diagnose. I will examine her tomorrow. Can I use a wound spray if I see an infection? If it’s a tumor theres probably not much I can do for her.
