You can buy 200+ red wigglers on amazon for very inexpensive. You can use them to make worm compost for your garden, and then you can feed the excess worms to your ladies. :) I was making worm compost for a little bit, but I had a baby and forgot about the bin. They died... :( I want to start...
I built a tractor last year, and it turned out terrible because I used the wrong size lumber, trying to save money. It worked well until my boys climbed it... I used 2x2's (I think that's right -- the small square boards you find at lumber stores), but if you use 2x4's you could make it very...
Er ma gersh, you guys. I went from having never had a broody hen to having one last year. I've had three so far this year, and then today, I have two more that want to as well. It was bringing these wyandottes on board that was the game changer. ha ha ha So I have 9 under my broody EE, and I am...
Sidewing, those kits are getting cuter and cuter. Just love how their ears are puppy sized when they are first born.
I mean to never let my chickens near my garden. My sons keep leaving the gate open, and so the chickens take the oportunity. Luckily it is only ever the one section. I'm debating...
Ha ha ha I need to spray a few chickens for digging up my carrots. Seriously, I've replanted 6 times. And I need to plant try again tomorrow. :( grrrrr
Speaking of gardening, since I know you love it, have you ever noticed different kind of potatoes sprouting at totally different rates? I...
Huh. I LOVE it when people lie about a sale. $10 is so worth that, right? What is wrong with people?? Did it have puffy cheeks at all a a new chick? The legs don't look at all slate colored, or is it just the picture?
So remember that silvery yellow chick we hatched out recently? The babe is feathering out white, with just a fkeck of black in one place. Came from a brown egg. I had discounted our light Brahma as being the chick's mother because the chick has clean legs, and a straight comb. The Brahma is my...
I think we need some pictures of this tiny baby. I bet she's adorable.
I love my Icelandic. I almost forget about her because she takes care of herself so well. She looks very similar to my brown Leghorns. I had another, but my neighbors cat got him when he strayed to their yard :(
Ah, yes. I had forgotten you'd mentioned a bantam. Our temps have been around the same as yours, but my babies are EE/Austrolorp mixes, and one Icelandic. The larger breeds have been great. I might worry about the little lass too, that she might get smothered by the others... I've never owned...
Eggsbert, I have chicks that are a week older than yours over-nighting outside. They are doing very well, though, they do still huddle together in a nesting box at bed time. I will be breaking them of that in the next month. I use pine shavings.
Kicken Wing, we sunk the walls of our coop a foot down into the ground. We (fingers crossed) have never had a problem. However, I don't know if it is because they couldn't get in, or because they haven't tried. We have had to keep an eye out for birds of prey.
