Been years since I drove any farm equipment, heck years for any forklift even. Maybe it is good I got it before I cut the lawn this year so I don't have the foot pedal drive habit yet for the season.
Maybe I should have the wife video me trying to learn to drive it for comedy sake.........
I arranged for a Bobcat rental this weekend, BlueLine in Neenah is dropping it off tomorrow so I can "play" all weekend. Need to regrade some spots around the garage never done right when the garage was built, and want to level a spot for the kids pool this year, regrade some stump holes left...
I use tractors so no dug down wire for me BUT my yard is horrible clay, a friend a few miles away has sand and has had some issues with raccoons digging.
Far as flying south, believe that instinct is bred out of livestock and livestock tends to fly poorly since they are often bred for heavier...
Vultures are of zero concern. Proximity to house doesn't mean as much as you would hope with winged stuff, I have seen a red tail hawk scratch at the downspout because a chipmunk ran up it, some hawks specifically hunt around bird feeders. Dogs would be my primary worry.
If they free range...
ducks can most definitely be kept over winter here, think the "Appleton" part would be a bigger deal than the weather even if it is becoming more chicken friendly. ;)
I live in Greenville and one of my daughters is asking for ducks.
Tractor Supply keeps chicks in stock, I have struck out nd they haven't had the Red Rangers I wanted so I ordered last night from Purely Poultry.
Both Berlin and Appleton Tractor supply are currently carrying chicks though.
I figure our hen that died did so bickering over a nest box, they only ever laid in one opening despite having more options, and her broody sibling was pecking at me as I removed the dead one.........
They seem to prefer to lay on the ground than in the "wrong" empty box.
Chickendreams24, the nest box was pulled immediately and fixed. These are my first chickens and made it almost 2 years before we had a loss like this. Early on we lost 2 chicks, then we lost two cornishX last spring. Culled some cockerels. This was the first adult pet/layer, kids took it...
Here it is 2" mud then 3-4 inches of frost, buried a chicken the other day.
Kids(young) were with me the other day when I found our first pet chicken casualty, accidental death, she found a way to get her head stick at a gap in the roost barrier I put on top of the nestbox.
Once I got thru...
at about 52 seconds there is a water trough on the right that looks like a "giant" cut up soda bottle. I think it is some scale trickery. Easier to believe than a rhea size chicken anyway.
Been eyeballing growing mushrooms for a few years, have some trimming to do on Ash and Maple trees and while I don't see Ash listed as recommended maybe I will try. I think I have a great place to put the logs along side the west facing side of a garage that has a tall row of evergreens a few...
Anyone know of a breeder in WI that might let some less that perfect Swedish Black hens go at reasonable price? I can't keep roosters so not looking for breeding stock, just like unique birds for the laying flock.
Last year I got some hatching eggs of another breed from a guy in New London...
Last night with the power out I was glad we had those solar yard lights outside because I brought a handful in the house for nightlights for the kids, an overnight bathroom light and the like. Going to make sure I always have a few on hand now.
One Silkie went broodie and vicious then as soon as she broke after a month or so her 4 "sisters" went broodie and are group sitting on speckled Sussex bantam eggs that all appear fertile.
The broodie Silkies are nasty. Last few days a Cream Legbar has been broodie but she will let me take eggs...
