I have to agree with a lot of you - it seems that most "new" horror movies rely on blood and gore and not enough on good scripts.
Hard to find a good horror movie to watch nowadays.

Has anyone mentioned yet "Something Wicked This Way Comes"
that's one of my middle son's favorite older movies - it is sort of scary, but not too bad, more suspense and circus freaks than horror.

Yes! Awesome movie and it scared the pants off my boys just because of the suspense!
THAT WAS THE NAME OF THAT MOVIE!!! I spent all afternoon trying to remember the movie with the windowpane that had a triangle crack in it!!! I LOVED that movie. Just the right amount of scary...

Yep. Nothing like messing up your children.
what are mothers for?
besides, they always pay us back for it in the end - the little... darlings.

I do have to say, however, that one film I wouldn't let them watch was Nightmare on Elm Street - that one even gave me the heebie jeebies for awhile.
I think they didn't get to see that one until they were about 16 or so.

My oldest was about 8 years old when he watched Troll and Pumpkinhead for the first time.
Of course, I had to hang garlic over his bedroom door for a year afterwards (just in case...) but he loved those movies.
I think that it depends on the child whether they are ready for the more scary...
When I want a horror movie (at my age) I always go for the "Cathoilic Church is the conspiratorial bad guy" movies - I love those
Omen, Exorcist, that type of flick.
Of course, it has to be the original Exorcist - and the original Omen (that remake of The Omen sucked badly )
I also like...
It's not scary in the least, but I adore Hocus Pocus That would be good for a much younger kid (the 11 year old would like it, but would feel "cheated" out of his horror movie )

Malcolm McDowell is disturbing and just plain weird
have you ever seen Cat People where he wakes up after shredding the um... lady of the evening... and grabs a piece of her off of his stomach and eats it while grooming himself for the day?
Just thinking about that makes me...
On the other hand... my middle child and his friends watched a movie at his friend's house once. They were going to watch one movie, after he called and asked if he could stay - as it turned out they changed their minds and watched "A Clockwork Orange" instead.
sheesh!! He was 16 at the time -...
My youngest son discovered Vincent Price movies at about age 15 - he loves Vincent Price movies.
Maybe one of those would be tame enough for a younger child?

My first horror movie was when I was 7 years old - my sister and I snuck downstairs after bedtime to watch Dracula (the one with Frank Langella)
I almost peed my pants because she wouldn't go to the bathroom with me, and I wasn't about to go alone.
