I have a Russian Orloff, and she handles the heat really well. A little bit of panting, but no more than that. That said, I've got a lot of trees in my yard, and the chickens have access to full shade all day. And Natasha is weird for an Orloff, she is active and somewhat aggressive, and she...

Hey guys, long time no see. My life has been crazy between kids and critters and my husband's health issues, but I'm back (if there is anyone around who still remembers me) and still raising chickens. I have a mixed flock of mostly EEs, with a Blue Andalusian (who will be six this year) , a...

Personally, I prefer to add chicks in the spring or early summer. I've got a pretty good set up, and I haven't had a problem with a lot of losses in the summer, but my girls generally stop laying, or slow down a lot during the summer. Early summer chicks are ready to lay once the weather...

I have ten lantana seedlings that decided to volunteer in my front yard. If anyone wants one, PM me. I don't know how well they will transplant, but for free its at least worth the try. I'm not sure of the color, but most likely they will be the pink/white/lavender/yellow variety.

I always brood outside. As soon as they arrive, I put them outside on my covered patio. I have used both a rabbit cage and a large dog kennel, with the kennel I'd put wire or shade cloth so they could not escape. For the first couple weeks, I use a heat lamp at night, I turn it on before bed...

It was nice to see Momto3 today,my husband was very happy to get the sugar cane. I only had one mimosa seedling, but the parent tree has a lot of seed pods, anyone who wants some is welcome to come and get some.

I'd be interested in a sugar cane start. Speaking of plants, does anyone want a mimosa seedling? The tree in our front yard had a baby, and they are pretty, so I don't want to just pull it up.

Heat tolerance seems to be one of those things that depends a lot on the individual bird, so I'd be surprised if they got more heat tolerant with age.

I'd just give them chicks, personally.

I know that a lot of people are not getting new birds because of avian flu, but if anyone wants to take the chance, or is just getting started out, I've got some Easter Eggers, Red sex-links and Egyptian Fayoumi that I need to find new homes for.

How tall is your fence? If you have a high fence most chickens will stay in. I have 6 foot block walls, one of them is the rear is my run, and the only chicken I've ever had get out was four months old and suicidal.

I brood on my shaded patio, in a large dog kennel. For the first 3 weeks, I turn on the heat lamp once it's full dark.

Food grade is the right stuff. DE doesn't poison the ants, it starves the colony by killing of the workers and making it hard for them to lay down scent trails, so it can take awhile to work.

Ducks will eat ants. I've also had decent luck killing ant hills off by covering the entrances with DE.It can take a few weeks, and the ants will sometimes move the entrance, so you have to be vigilant. If they are getting into the feed, I'd treat the run and area around the feeder as d well.

I wish I'd been able to hang out longer, but I was running late, but it is always great to say hi to everyone. The passion fruit vine looked great, thanks Gallo! If you ever make it up to the valley, let me know and I'll make site you get a blackberry cutting.

Momto3, it's really funny, especially since the chickens love her back. They'll let her walk right up and pay them or even pick them up. For shade around the coop, I've had good luck with a pomegranate. It loses its leaves, but that is in the fall, when shade isn't as important, and the...

Normally I'd agree with you, but in this case the trees have the same number of peaches that they have in past years, they are just a lot smaller, and started ripening almost a month early.

Hi all! It's been awhile since I've posted, things have been busy around here, and then I had to catch up on the forum, lol. It's been a crazy year in my garden. We got a good crop on the winter veggies, but not so much with the spring planting, I think that the odd weather we had messed...

I missed out on some of the breeds that I wanted this past spring, so this year I got my order in as soon as Meyer opened up ordering :D I got Egyptian Fayoumis, Easter Eggers and Red Sex-links. As always, I ordered more than I need so that I'd get the bulk discount and save on shipping, so...
