Arizona Chickens

.... Their crops may be full, but nutritionally they're actually starving.
So sad.
sorry you're having this problem...
Teachers usually like students doing research...
maybe if you wrote a "short" paper annotated with studies..
you could get her to reconsider...
OR it's possible, that she only has a small budget to work with to feed them...
offer to try and get donations from a local feed and supply store

Quote: Thsi makes so much sense!!

I continue to try and get her to change their diet but she is to prideful to ask the school to buy feed.

Thankyou for clearngi that up for me!

I will voice my concern more fervently to her and if she continues to do nothin, ourprincipal.

I hate to see eour flock like this, and even more so the kids who are using those birds for fair having such an unfair disadvantage.

My three grown standard roos perch on my arm too.... especially when i have pomegranate or strawberry in my hand.

My white crested black polish cockerel, same age as the trio, had a trying to land on me when I bend over! So far I knock him off or to I think my lil a laced old English game bantam has. Which he I'm certain only did cause he likes to fly onto people's heads. Lol

Our birds can be funny can't they?

They basically look like that all of the time.

It's like when they eat the hamburger, they calm down for a week like they got their fix and start to grow feather stubs again, and then they crave it and start to eat eachothers feathers and even break skin..... I've been trying to explain what a bad thing this is for the chickens (Their normal diet isn't very chicken kosher either, pure scratch grains.....) but she basically tells me to pound sand and continues what she is doing.

I've been very tempted to complain to our principal about the practices but I doubt he would know what to do.

That's why. The protein level isn't high enough. Plus, learned behavior now. Feathers are protein. I've noticed that keeping mine to 18-20% protein feed helps. Though every so often they go after my younger sultans feet. Poor wcblack polish cockerel is not given a chance to regrow his head feathers. Gotta get blue kote this week. Also, separate him. Though I've noticed he likes the girls do it!

Pull up nutritional studies & see if that will help. I'm surprised your ag teacher doesn't get the correct feed need. If it doesn't with her talk to the principal on up. Maybe make a tip call to the state Dept Of AG? Or similar?

Look up borderlands food bank their produce on wheels. If you go to a site, it's Saturdays in the am, often you can take as much of the their throwaway stuff as you can manage. I went to 1 location & someone got to before me or had an arrangement as they were loading up a truck, but I was able to get a box of tomatoes. The location here, so much available! They do it every weekend in various spots. I think there's at least one near you.

Also, email them. Maybe for anything close to the school of the dispose of the garbage themselves they'd bring it to the school instead-i don't know if they could or would, but I an idea. It could mean boxes, etc if the don't sort. They a donate leftover food stuff to nonprofits that go to the sites to get it. Keep in mind to its everything from maybe a small bruise or mark to mushy for the throwaway stuff. I found stuff I could salvage & freeze for them for later. If you don't get it cleaned, sorted, etc ASAP then it goes bad faster. However, you can lacto-ferment it to keep it longer. Or be generous & feed to the pigs, etc. It could be a way to supplement or get produce for them. I forget who, but someone posted before on here about a Phoenix site. This is what I learned since.

Hello, again! I'm glad to see that you made it over here to our Arizona thread. There are some other members here that live near to you, I think.

Hey guys, long time no see.

My life has been crazy between kids and critters and my husband's health issues, but I'm back (if there is anyone around who still remembers me) and still raising chickens. I have a mixed flock of mostly EEs, with a Blue Andalusian (who will be six this year) , a Rex Sex-link and a Russian Orloff. In the spring I'm going to be adding some more color with some white and brown layers.
I'm also raising 3 turkeys as an experiment, and will be finding out how they taste in a couple weeks :D

In other chicken related news, one of my Olive Eggers has gone broody, and I'm in the market for fertile eggs.
