Vader's babies: Buckets are great for keeping the eggs from rolling out of the nest...but they don't leave much room for the new roommates. So I moved them into some new, roomier digs. Family photo: Here are all 5 of her chicks. (As of this evening.) I did get one cute picture.

Quote: Yeah!! :ya:ya That is awsome! I lived up to my screen name yesterday afternoon. Vader got off her nest for a constitutional (it's been 3 days!) and I was in the coup hunched under two layers of a wool blanket with a flashlight trying to candle her eggs. Never mind that it was 91...

Quote: And.....?! How many are developing? Hopefully all 12! I haven't candled Vader's yet. Day 7 today. My brightest flashlight can't even see into the green ones, so there is no chance with the Marans eggs. It's not worth losing a finger (or two) to only candle 5 of 18 eggs. Vader...

Gallo del Cielo - Howdy Broody Buddy! - I put eggs under Vader today!! So we are only 2 days behind you and Jim. Betsy put herself in "lock-down" today (the thought of leaving the nest didn't even cross her mind), so I suspect something is happening with the three eggs she has left. Maybe...

Mahonri, NoSkiveez, & LareePQG - Thanks for the input. I have candled the egg. It is solid black with an air pocket at one end. (as of a couple of nights ago) I think that means it is/was developing. I didn't know you could tap the egg to make the chick peep. Cool! I didn't hear anything...

All right all you incubator owning folks who have watched Waaaaaay more eggs hatch than me. (Which is easy, since I'm at 0 or 1.) I need your help. This is the best picture I could get of the egg Betsy is sitting on that has a crack. Does it look like it is hatching??? Or did some one step...

Quote: Space I have. Nice looking space, not so much. Fortunately the chickens don't care! I got the chick creep idea from that broody thread. It is the same concept you use with cows & horses that are turned out all the time, but you want to provide supplemental feed for the calves/foals...

Quote: Hi broody-buddy! Thanks to Smiles-N-Sunshine (Bryan) I got 12 hatching eggs yesterday! I was so excited last night I couldn't wait to set the eggs and they went under my broody at 7:30 pm. I'm half-way through the thread you pointed out and I read all of the info from another...

Quote: I think the emu farm up by Picacho sells eggs......But I shouldn't be enabling! Did you mean the Ostrich ranch? No emus there as far as I know. There's a couple here in Cochise County that raise emus, and I talked with them last year when I was exploring emus myself. I forget how...

Quote: We can be broody together! This will be my 2nd broody. The first, Betsy, is on day 16 and is having a rough time. I gave her 8 eggs. (2 green, 2 white, 3 medium/1 large brown) Between days 3 & 5 she "lost" 1 green and the large brown and "gained" 3 medium browns. (I didn't know...

I think I have another broody. I was putting everyone to bed and checking for stray eggs tonight, and reached into the favorite nesting bucket without shining a light in it first. I encountered feathers followed very rapidly by a loud growl and a well-wielded beak. Vader (as in Darth) is my...
