I just like the look of the birds and don't plan on beeding to sale so a mixing of chick colors would just make them more interesting in the long run. :) black, blue, splash, and lavender would be cool.
From what I understand they're not pure blooded Australorp but actually 3rd Generation crosses with lavender orpingtons. When I asked if she also had black Australorp she replied that the ones she has are split for lavender genes, I'm not sure what that means exactly.
I'm in the process ofgettin more chicks. I've hopefully reserved 10 lavender australaorps and 5 more black ones. IDK if the person I'm getting them from is a member here or not. I found them on ebay.
So I went to the store today looking for new fencing and really did not come back with much. So I started looking online and found 19 gauge 1/2 inch hardware cloth that I could use. Do you think that would be strong enough to work against predators?
Thank you everyone for your sympathy and suggestions. This is as far as I've gotten to know Coop I was building so it's not too late to change things up a little. I think I can buy Lowe's grid panels like you use on a dog kennel at Tractor Supply that will fit the sections on my run. Should I...
I think it went in through the nest box. I don't have a lock on it. Whatever it was had bit at the wire and dug at the bottom but I don't think it got in that way as there was no real hole. I saw coyote and raccoon tracks around the coop. As for predators we have coyotes, foxes, Bobcats...
Horror. My morning starts with horror. I went out to check on my chicks and found a Massacre. 6 out of my 9 chicks dead. Tore to shreds by some preditor last night. I have one female chick left and what is probably 2 male. I'm shocked and traumatized this morning. I brought the three remaining...
I have 1" hex chicken wire for the run part and I will be building a roof over the whole thing. The coop part is made from 7/16" plywood and something else i cant remember the name of lol. Its a oIutdoor siding material and looks like planks of wood.
I got quite a bit done today but did not...
Thanks. So I'm debating on doing just two doors on the back so that I can open up the and rake the waste out. Or i might put some pull out drawers in the bottom that could be removed. What do you all think?
Got a bit more done. I'm building it in two sections and will put them together. It will be 8x8x16 when I'm done.
Yes I plan on placing wire around the bottom going out from it to keep predators from digging in.
I hope my roo is like that!
Oh and now I know the one I was in slight question about is a roo also. So I have 2 lol.
7/9 hens to roos is not bad for straight run though!
Ps. I started work on my new australaorp coop today. I hope it will be good and easy to clean.
I'll try and post pictures...
Most. I have 6 that I know are female and one runt that looks to favor female but not growing tail feathers yet.
Then I have one that bony wise looks like the confirmed male I have but no comb growth yet. So I'm hoping female. But statistically it's probably male lol.
I'll post a pic of the group.
Blue is cool but personally I like the black better.
So I'm thinking I may have won some sort of lottery and have 1 roo and 8 hens under out of the 9 straight runs chicks I got.
I did not know they came in any color other than black! That's cool.
My little ones are 18 days old. One has a pink comb started. I guess I can assume that one is a he lol.
