Australorps breed Thread

I just like the look of the birds and don't plan on beeding to sale so a mixing of chick colors would just make them more interesting in the long run. black, blue, splash, and lavender would be cool.

If infact both lavs carry two lav genes than theoretically they will breed true. However, if they are anything like the blue genes that I have been breeding then no, you could still have self blue (lav), black and splash babies. Remember self blue or lav is just diluted black.

Everybody says they are not going to breed to sell, but the truth of the matter is that you probably will. If you have any cockerels they will make the decision for you LOL, unless they are isolated. I learned one thing long ago, and you can take this to the bank, NATURE FINDS A WAY, so never say never, whether you intend to or not.

I CANNOT wait... I get my Black Australorp chickie tomorrow!!! I called today, and she is scheduled to arrive tomorrow... I already have one Easter Egger, one Golden Sex Link, and one Light Brahma in her little batch. I would like to grab another one or two chicks with her. Anyone have any suggestions?

I can choose from:
Cuckoo Marans
Feather Legged Bantams (would definitely get two of these if I get any)
Black Sex Links
White Leghorn
Rhode Island Red

(all are hatchery stock)

I also already have some teenagers (Easter Egger, Barred Rock, Silver Laced Wyandotte, and a Buff Orpington)

Did I mention I CANNOT wait for my BA!!!!

Search those breeds and pick the most docile. That said I've got four breeds and none hang out with a different breed to themselves.

We just added four Black Australorps and the first thing I've noticed right off is that they are SUPER docile. We have Barred Rocks and S/L Wyanodottes (sp.) out in the coop already, and they have certain "attitude" about them. The Barred Rocks are friendly, but also at the top of the flock pecking order. They can sort of be bullies, lol. The S/L/W's have a perpetually aware look and attitude. They are also friendly, but always look at you sort of suspiciously - or like if this were a few million years ago they might eat you. I've already noticed the same look from the two S/L/W chicks we got at the same time as the Australorps.

The Australorps are SWEET. They make the perfect baby chick face even at almost fully fledged and just sort of accept whatever it is that you are doing. They had zero upset when I used the shop vac in the brooding cage. I came up slowly and was watching to see if they would jump and flap, but they just watched all the poo and scratched out food get slurped up. I had to move some of them because they just sort of stood there watching. It will be interesting to see how they fit into the bunch out in the yard when we introduce them. I think they should be alright, since they're already in with two S/L/W's and seem to be diplomatic enough to fall in with the others. they're not arguing over status or tripping over life, just rollin along. Nothing to prove to nobody. More food will be here shortly. Not gonna fight you over it.

They are also SUPER CURIOUS. A hand in the cage is pecked, poked, investigated, climbed on... One night when they were little(er) I picked one up and ended up with all four when they climbed up and fell asleep on my hands.
