Around 8 to 10 weeks if you feel down their legs you should have a tiny bump (you can barely feel it but it is considerably noticeable) towards the bottom part by the feet. If there is a bump on each leg in that area it is obviously a rooster. Hens never get these as it is the beginning...
Although these chicks are only part Australorp, it is my first time hatching chicks the natural way and I wanted to brag a little. So far two chicks have hatched out! Not a good ratio but still very exciting. You can definitely tell who the Daddy is on both of them (my BA rooster). Almost...
I got 5 Ideal BA pullets and out of them 2 have just gone broody, which is awesome cause I have one SLW sitting on a clutch right now so I have the hatch bug and want to set another 12 eggs. I will let you know how they do in 21 days hehe.
HI EVERYONE!!!! I am back! hehe I have had a lot of stuff going on over here in the real life corner so I have not been able to post on BYC for a bit. I am so glad to see that everyone is still doing well and we have a few newcomers to the thread.

I know I just bought this but out of all of the literature I have read out there on BA's this book is amazing, has pictures and goes into every single detail of what makes the perfect BA, etc. The Australorp by Ray Connor is the book. You have to order it from Australia but it is way...
My "The Australorp" by Ray Connor got here last week and I have virtually memorized the thing already. *LOL* When I was looking for my rooster I wanted to get some Aussie stock and it is virtually impossible to find anyone in the US that breeds to that standard. And of course you cannot get them...

Not sure about Superior but I know that Ideal and Murray McMurray have good stock of Australorps. My rooster (pictured in my avatar and I posted a few pics of him in previous posts on here) came from Murray McMurray and he was a show bird before I picked him up from his previous owner...

I have heard from some ppl over the years about one or two of their BA's being broody but growing up we never had them do that. Our Orpingtons and a few Wyandottes here and there were super broody but not our BA's. They were just egg machines. But that is not to say it does not happen...

I am telling you, once you get them you will never regret it. My girls and guy are so friendly, they are already laying at 15 weeks, they free-range in my yard and they are always the last ones in the coop at night because they just cannot give up the scratching and composting they love...
Hey all! Sorry for being MIA. I have been super busy around here and the weather has not been helping my health out much. I hope all is going well with everyone. I wanted to give a quick update on my needing an Australorp rooster. I finally found the most beautiful Australorp rooster from a...
I would think that as long as the bird held all of the same traits, i.e. temperament, production, shape, quality as the original breed and the only thing that was different was the colour it would be still be considered a purebred Australorp. Especially if you were using a HQ foundation breed...
Hi all,
My name is Nikki, and I just love Australorps. Until I found this thread I only knew of Black Australorps, I had no idea they came in other colours too. I just bought 7 of them from Ideal in September, 6 hens and one roos. Until today they had all been doing well. I only lost one hen...
