I start my chicks out on a 28% gamebird starter feed for 2-4 weeks, then switch to a starter/grower that is 21%. I have had no problem with my breeders by doing this...... The thing I don't know is what other things are different in the meat maker compared to the starter/grower.
DMRippy posted a picture of one of her Splash Coppers on 1/27/14. Post # 47661. Here is the link:

I remember someone else here on BYC posted a picture of a rooster similar to your guy and I think they said it was a splash from a copper breeding that had bleed over of copper......but don't quote me on that. I can't remember who it was....DCChicken maybe??..., but it was on one of the Marans...

At eight weeks, I would be expecting coloring in a cockerel.....but that comb popping up and the size lead me to wonder about Luna being a late blooming cockerel....so my vote is I would give it a couple of weeks to see if coloring develops.

It is in my opinion, because if they are caponized, the meat doesn't get tough and stringy like rooster, so you can let them grow longer and get more meat on their bones, yet have it remain tender. I have a Marans/Orpington cross that currently weighs 10 1/2 pounds. He is getting processed...
