Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Ok, so now to decide if we want to keep him or try to find someone who wants a cockerel. 1 out of 8 ain't bad I guess. But we only got 2 cuckoo marans and I really wanted darker eggs to go with our other breeds. Boo, I guess I could make Olive eggers since we have 2 easter eggers as well....

You may still have more roos hiding in there. I have a young roo that I missed when the roo guy was out... I think. Anyway.... he has a small pullet comb with no color really at about 4 months old...... he has NICE color though and that gives him away. I have had a few roos that didn't want to show their rooness early.

MOST of them I can tell at 3-4 weeks very clearly. It's crazy how they have full bright red combs at that age! I had some 8 week olds I was sure were pullets...they were hiding from the meat pen...but they're cockerels. They can only hide for so long.

The Bresse cockerels are the same way.

IDK, are they supposed to be colored that way? the ones I have do not have any color on their breasts, just some copper around the necks...

These are just two of my BCM's Wondering if the breast coloring is the difference between a cockrel and pullets ?????? Any input ??
They are about 6 weeks now.
Same answer here as the other thread you have 4 cockerels in that picture and the one with a red breast would be a cull. Copper Marans should not look like that either pullets or roos. The coloring does not tell you male or female in this case. Males will get color in the wings and saddle feathers and pullet will not.

Newbie question here...I was reading the SOP on the Marans site and it was saying that for BCM green sheen is not required. Does this mean it's preferred? What about a purple sheen? Curious because one of my 4 week olds is showing a green sheen and another seems to be purple-ish. Thanx!

Hi all! I just wanted to post a couple pictures of my 17 week old Birchen Marans! I posted on here a while ago about my chicks, I knew I had one pullet and one cockerel but one seemed gender confused (feathered in SUPER slow, but was tiny and had a medium comb and wattles). I am happy to report that she was a pullet!

My handsome boy! Ozzie is getting prettier by the day as his big boy feathers come in. I am bummed that I will be rehoming him

Pullet 1 has good leg feathering and great birchen coloring. Her name is PeeWee since she has always been the runt :) She was gender confused until about 15 weeks.

Pullet #2 (looks REALLY close to laying!). She doesn't have great leg feathering and no birchen coloring but she is still beautiful to me! This is Ugga

This has been covered many times on the BCM thread but I understand the huge number of posts to wade through. Essentially, consensus is that beetle green is good and purple is undesirable as it seems directly linked with overmelanization. That's the short story.
