Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I have 9 BCM as well as 4 Barred Rock Cockrels. This is the young fellow who is showing more copper coloring than any other of my chicks. Have some that are just barely giving a hint of come copper coming in at various places but nothing like this one. Does that mean he is for sure a cockrel? And does that mean the others who don't have such a strong marking are pullets? They are about 5-6 weeks at this point. Since they all have the sharp sawtooth comb.....its difficult to tell the difference, even at this age/!

I see 4 cockerels in that picture. The one with a red breast would be a cull here. The one on the bottom right has a carnation comb.... also a cull. there is also a cockerel attached to the comb in the bottom left. Combs are my key to telling roos..... pullets could also get red breasts like that.

Your boy is going to be very handsome. I wanted a good looking LF Blue Copper Marans roo like your Pepper, but it looks like I am growing a Velociraptor instead:

The poor thing is not going to be as majestic as I has hoped.

I did not realize that Marans went through such an awkward dinosaurish stage! I have a pullet that went from:

to:

I need to update my pics. That was about a month ago, and she has changed so much since then. They are beautiful birds!

I am so excited! I moved my New BLUE roo out to the breeding pen today. He was VERY happy! It was so odd to see a sea of BLUE in a breeding pen of mine. I have 6 Blue hens 1 Black and now a Blue Copper Roo. SPLASH anyone? LOL. His tail is growing back nicely too.

Ok, so now to decide if we want to keep him or try to find someone who wants a cockerel. 1 out of 8 ain't bad I guess. But we only got 2 cuckoo marans and I really wanted darker eggs to go with our other breeds. Boo, I guess I could make Olive eggers since we have 2 easter eggers as well....
