Just wanted to share. My Splash Marans hatched this cockerel..he's Splash Marans x BBR Phoenix. I just think he's neat. :D

My comment had nothing to do with the picture only your comment and link to blue laced red Ameraucanas. They don't exist. They are not APA APPROVED and therefore are EE and the picture that brought all this up the chicks has yellow legs.

You sure that is not a MF d'Uccle?
No, he didn't have those....here is the CL link with the pics of his birds.

Maybe that will help ID what I have :)

Ok, here comes the group photo shoot of my 3 chipmunk chicks at 3 1/2 weeks old. Trying to find out if they are indeed Golden Salmons. They all came from eggs from a pure BCM pen. I have only seen pics of the GSM's as newborn chicks on the Aussie website, and mine looked just like that, but I have no idea what they are supposed to look like once they start feathering in. So...please chime in here, all you experienced Marans people!

Side note: taking pics of 3 babies on the couch was....interesting. The one with the most leg feathering is also the most mellow. The medium-feathered one is a little more wound up, and the one with one lone feather on each leg was a complete spaz, and also screamed bloody murder the whole time. I think it's been hanging out with my Polish chicks! LOL

Thanks in advance for your assessment/opinions! I'm new to Marans and trying to learn all I can!

The pullets will start to have the salmon breast at this age. The one facing in the last picture has a brown/salmon breast...it may have too much red...but it's still brown. The males will start to have black or blue, (if they're blues), breasts by this age. The way the feathers on the shanks of the super-feathers one looks seems a bit off, but I'm no judge. You may just have to wait until they mature and see their egg color and body structure. I'll PM you some pics of ours at that age. I wouldn't hesitate to contact your egg source and ask what the possibilities for the chipmunk chicks might be. BTW-these all look like pullets to me. Skies

black copper Marans genome : ER/ER S+/S+ Ml/Ml Mh/Mh
Golden Salmon genome : e+/e+ s+/s+ ( -)
a completely recessive genome. Now it can crop up from
BCM but you are also going to have Ml and /or Mh in the chicks.
So no, they are not pure Golden Salmon. They are part Golden Salmon.
Both Ml and Mh are sticky genes, tough to breed out.
1. Take a male to a pure GS female ( you got from someone else).
2. Take the best male and bred it back to its mother.
Look for any proper females ( keep them, cull the rest).
3. Take the best male and breed it back to its grandmother ( the pure GS hen).
Look for proper females from this mating. Keep them, cull the others.
4. Now do a full brother to sister breeding from this latest generation. see if
any Ml or MH crop up. Keep proper color cull any ML or MH.

Ok at this point it is time to outcross. Find and absolutely pure cock and hen.
5. Breed the outcross birds to your latest proper colored generation.
Keep the chicks from the 4 breedings separate. Mark them.
If you get pure chicks from any of the breedings...all pure( no ML or MH pollution), rejoice.
6. Take those, ID their heritage and start to line breed.
( if you don't get any, keep winnowing until you do.)
Best,
karen

Thanks, Skies and Karen! Skies, I replied to your PM. Karen, what does Ml and Mh represent? I obviously have a long road ahead of me, beginning with waiting for these kids to grow up enough to see if they will even be useable in a breeding program. Then, to find husbands/wives for them...whew! I'll be working on this for the rest of my natural life! Good thing they're so cute! ;)
