Yay! I finally have a BCM hen that not only goes broody, but actually hatches the chicks! She lays lots of very dark eggs and now this! She's a keeper.

Hi everyone! For those of you who raise Birchens.... how is their egg color compared to Black Coppers? Thanks!

Thanks! Mine is getting close to that, and I've noticed he seems to have gotten a bit bigger or something over the spring. He just seems to look more mature. Since he was a year in April I wondered if he was doing a final "fill out" or something.

When would you consider a BCM male fully grown and mature? Thanks!

Thank you! I'm not seeing a lot of difference between the two except that brand's grower is 18% instead of 22%. I think I'll go ahead and use it.

I have 11 BCM chicks and it looks like 9 are cockerels. I also have 4 Ameraucana chicks in with them. At best I'll be keeping one of the cockerels, so that means 8 of them are headed to freezer camp and this is basically a meat bird pen. Can I feed this entire group "Meat Maker" feed (22%, I...

I have had a few chicks grow feathers in like this. I had one pullet that I was sure somehow hatched out cuckoo out of my BCM's. She didn't keep those feathers and they were gone by the time was adult (probably gone by 12-16 weeks, actually). She had nice color as an adult, but did retain a...

I've had 4 BCM roosters. My first two were young and processed when one came at me at 18 weeks. My second rooster was MEAN and caused injuries before being culled. Unfortunately, I didn't understand that he would pass that on and I heard one of his offspring was also mean. My current rooster...

If they're only 2 months old they won't have spurs yet. They look like males to me with those big red combs and wattles.

I've had "Golden Comets" that have laid pretty dark eggs at the beginning of their laying. Not to say that isn't from your marans, but if your other breeds are new pullets it could be from one of them.

What do you guys think of my guy here? He is now about 22 weeks old. Things I think I see: Good -He seems to have a nice, wide stance. Not so good -He has that "halo" thing going on with his hackles. Questions: How is he type-wise? Thanks for any comments good or bad! He...

Our broody hatched 5 BCM's and 2 Cuckoo marans. I'm thrilled to have gotten eggs from this particular breeder! My husband was thrilled that it didn't involve the energy-hog incubator or his garage! My perfect rooster is surely in there somewhere...... Can you see the little behind...

I can only speak for my few hens. I have one hen that will lay every day or every other day for a few months, then she'll take a break. Another was a good layer but was broody most of the time, so I'd get a few weeks of good laying out of her and then a long break. The others seem to be off...

Could the mom be that hen in the picture? I don't see a spot on its head, so it's possibly a sex-link pullet from your RIR rooster & the barred hen. That's what mine look like when I hatch them. If it is, it will probably be black, not cuckoo.

Thanks, Don. He has a problem with a bit of color on his chest, but not much. His body type seems to be longer than another male that I have. I've noticed I tend to like a body type that isn't quite what it should be. Do you see any red flags with his type?

Does this young guy fall under the "straw" hackles category? Today is butcher day and I'm wondering if he has any redeeming qualities besides being a real sweetie. I'm trying to "cull hard" this year without letting emotions get the best of me. Thanks! He's about 10-12 weeks.

Speaking of yellow........... I have a cockerel that has nice colored legs, but it seems that the bottoms of his feet are yellow. Is that acceptable or just as bad as if he had yellow legs?

Congratulations on your new babies & thanks for sharing! I can't tell them apart until they're a few weeks old...although, sometimes I can make a guess on behavior a little earlier than that. Someone might be able to share some tips, though.
