The first splash is a pullet not a male.
Sorry, I guess my post was not clear, yes I know she is a pullet, she is the one currently in the pen with my blue coppers, and the second bird, the cockerel, is without any hens in a separate pen.
Your hen looks similar to my girl, Eva (Zsa...

Thanks, everyone! (Roger, hard to lurk here with a new baby, huh?!? Yes, the names seemed to fit the two pullets!) I am pleased about the Splash girls, and the egg color looks nice... My BCM hen is hysterical! Here legs are so, so dark, though. Is that the norm? Hackles not...

I have two blue cochins that go broody if you even whisper the word near them! One is in the dog crate right now, as I don't have anything to give her! She was the mama of these Splash Marans, took her job very seriously, and did a fantastic job!
rustyswoman and Debbi, I am hoping...
Wow, thanks! He is my first roo ever and is very respectful of me. I am also thinking he will fill out some more. I purchased eggs from a breeding of Channing Grisham line, breeding Blue to Blue. I let my ever-broody Blue Cochin do the work, and voila! Chicks! I had 5/7 hatch, (one stuck...
Hey to all you Marans folks! Can I get an opinion on my Splash Roo and pullets? They are all 15 weeks old now. Lil" Joe is crowing up a storm, but is a polite young dude. The girls are quite feminine looking, I think!
Thanks!

Those combs start getting really red between 3 - 4 weeks. You may still see another pink comb before the week is over . . . .
Ditto!
Also...about the leg feathering- The feathering that they have on their shanks is just like the rest of the chick down that covers them when they...
My Splash Marans chicks are three weeks old, and of the five, one has a definite bigger and redder comb! Is it normal to be able to see this so soon? It is really pronounced compared to the others... Does that mean i have four girls and one little dude, or do i need to worry another comb will...
So, here are my 24 day-old babies! Can you tell me if male or female yet? They are Blacks, VillageChicken!
What should I be looking for to distinguish? Thanks!

Great! Thanks so much for answering, I really appreciate it. I am trying to learn all this, and admit to being fascinated by the genetics. I will keep your notes on the color chart I am amking to help myself.

Wowie! Leave the thread for 24 hours and there is mega-activity. Nice.
So pinkchick, you asked what my project is. and I was thrilled to see that most of today's comments have to do with color genetics, as that is what I am interested in. I hatched the four FBCM's that we are hoping are...

Mel, there is a list on BYC of what you should and shouldn't feed chickens. I don't think it mentions laying, though... No citrus is the biggest thing, I guess.

Hi,
pinkchick, you asked me about the breeding of the Splash Marans eggs I posted two or three days ago that had such nice dark coloring. Here is the gal's answer: My Splash came from a breeding of Channing Grisham line, breeding Blue to Blue. Once in a while some copper will show up, but most...
