I am struggling with a similar issue myself right now. Recently bought some birds that turned out NOT to be what I thought & was not informed before hand & I have been feeling bad about it, not knowing if I have a legitimate complaint & should say something or just chalk it up to "experience" & eat it. I guess it's a "buyer beware" world out there. Buying directly from the breeders has been all good for me up until this so maybe I should concider myself Lucky. I would never do anything to someone else that I wouldn't think fair if done to me so I might just be pushing "my own" rules onto others. But, honestly folks....................I always thought it was called "the golden rule."

It is the golden rule...."He Who Has The Gold Makes The Rules"

Well, all I can do is hope that the girls at least lay nice eggs. Just my luck my orpingtons will be darker.

Thank you everyone for the advise, it has been very helpful. I'm sure I will post more pics as they grown more.

I hope this is in the right place.
I'm wondering if a Wheaten Maran roo can be used to create sex-links with Silver based hens such as the Light Sussex?

Not if you want to sex the chicks at hatch. I think they will both produce pale yellow or white chicks, even though the Wheaten is Gold, chickdown is white. You may be able to sex them when the feathers begin to come in after a couple days, though it will not be as easy as a non-wheaten based sex-link.

My Splash Marans chicks are three weeks old, and of the five, one has a definite bigger and redder comb! Is it normal to be able to see this so soon? It is really pronounced compared to the others... Does that mean i have four girls and one little dude, or do i need to worry another comb will spring up??

Also, all chicks had feathering at hatch, but now one seems to have none on her shanks, and one looks, well, piddly... Do they lose shank-feathering??
See the one at the top left of the picture? (and the boy is at right...)

Absolutly normal, and I'd bet you have 4 pullets and 1 roo just from those pictures. About the shank feathering, I'd bet it would come back when they're feathered out better but they might have lighter feathering. I wouldn't think it would stay gone.

Dawn, Dolly and her hatch mate the little would-be clean shanked baby can come live with me. They will both make lovely Olive Egger babies with my Claude.

Those combs start getting really red between 3 - 4 weeks. You may still see another pink comb before the week is over . . . .

Ditto!

Also...about the leg feathering- The feathering that they have on their shanks is just like the rest of the chick down that covers them when they hatch....this down will be replaced by real feathers as they grow and feather out.
