I have been working with the Marans for 4 years so really not all that long of a time but I have found that the chickens generally produce the same color as the Parents did or a bit lighter it takes some work to get a darker egg so I have found that breeders either breed for egg color or chicken...
This is my experience I keep the roo from the darkest egg's I hatch as I was reading some where that a roo gives 14 of his genes to the egg and the hen gives 7 genes for the egg color . And this is how I go and it seems to work for me ..
I have noticed my Marans do have a heavy coating on their eggs but my girls are producing eggs with heave shells and I do get complaints from many of my customers who buy my eggs as I put out a multi colored eggs carton with Marans, Easter Eggers, Russian Orloff's and Road Island Reds .

Try feeding your chicks some hard boiled egg's, just mash them up and serve it might take them a wile to get use to eating the egg's but make them a new egg every day till they eat it and once them little guys start getting the taste for the egg's you will need to count your fingers ( ha, ha )...
I have had that problem before and I have several smaller cages just for such cases and then I watch them for a week or so and then keep a log on how many egg's are produced per week color it also helps me identify each chickens egg and I can identify each chickens egg's with 17 hens ....
