Hi Don,
I will definitely be interested to see the results on your mossy birds. I have two pullets that I pretty much know came from very mossy hens, covered by a birchen rooster, who supposedly came out of a dark egg. Neither pullet is mossy. One lays a light egg, and the other lays a very dark...
Yes, on the marans egg color chart. I have sisters to this pullet whose egg color I'm disappointed in, but the egg on the right is also a sister, but this is the FIRST egg like that I've gotten from that pen. They are both in different pens. You just never know what you'll get.
I was off today, so I was able to get some pics of the Blue Copper rooster I got last year. He is super sweet. I've got him with some hens I hatched last year from him and possibly another rooster. These hens I'm sure have faults, but I'm just hatching egg layers from them, but they are pretty...
I was just thinking the brown-red cochin bantams because of the color, do langshans come in brown-red? I was in contact with a lady who had a perfect pair of br cochin bantams, the male had lower tail carriage, the pair looked a lot like the pictures on the France marans website. If I could...
Nicol,
Do you know if anyone has ever used brown-red bantam cochins to make bantam marans? I thought if I could find a tighter feathered bantam(not like these poofy show birds), I would try working on bantams. I know the brown-red's like I would want to use are out there, I have a picture of...
I got an egg from a guy at work that is exactly like that, he thought it was a barred rock, but after questioning him, I'm pretty sure it's a cuckoo maran. I am trying to track down the source of that hen to see if I can find more like her. I have a couple of hens that lay a spherical egg...
Hi Ernie,
I have a question about your Cuckoos. Do they lay a larger egg than your Black Coppers? I had a guy at work claim one of his rhode island reds was laying a dark chocolate egg. I said no way, bring me that egg and let me see it. Well, he brought it, it IS dark, not quite as dark...
Wynette, I'm interested in how Nicol is creating her bantams. I had thought about doing that also, but don't know if I have enough know how yet to do that. Well, actually just wondering how bantams are created in the first place. That might be a question I need to post on the yahoo group, or...
Yeah the sprig thing is bugging me too....I thought I had gotten rid of all the hens with sprigs, but found one this week with one. I'm wondering if she didn't just wander back down from the other pen at the house. Anyway,,,I remember back,,,a WHILE back the conversation turned to sprigs and how...
Hi Nicol,
I understand about it being a dq, in all breeds, I just wondered why it became a dq in the first place. I think carnation combs on penes are ugly , but for the breed that's their standard, and I think huge massive combs on roosters(or hens) are ugly also. I was just sitting around the...
OK guys,,,I have a general question. I'm not saying I want to breed birds with sprigs,,,,but WHY are sprigs an undesirable trait in purebred poultry? Is there a production, vigor, or health issue with having a bird with sprigs? I cull every one I find, just found one today that I missed...
It looks to me like Elvis has a side sprig. Not something you'd want to breed forward. Since I've been following the Marans thread, I've also become comb-conscious. I don't like the huge beefy combs on Marans. I think the blue copper I have has one of the prettiest combs I've ever seen. I wish...
