Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

This is certainly a more clear answer. I am not meaning to be unkind or taking away any joy in the win. Their type is good, but I don't understand the lack of color in the ears. I am confused.
I think the unwanted white is Pearl white as seen on the lobes of leghorns. When laying all my BCM hen/pullets red earlobes get kind of chalky looking. I don't think there is anyway to prevent that from happening. My thinking is it is similar to my lovely yellow Delaware pullet legs getting lighter and lighter the more they lay. Always learning and these are just my thoughts on the subject, maybe someone else will chime in :)

When hens are heavily in lay, they often do lose the brightness in their combs, wattles, and even in their legs. Anyone with Plymouth Rocks can attest to this - a nice, bright yellow leg in the "off season" often turns to a dusky yellow in the height of the lay season.

Regardless - I will say again, PLEASE REMEMBER that these are not even approved yet. NO variety of bantam Marans have been approved. If you have ever developed a breed, you know they go through many, many generations before you see consistency in the flock. Negative comments are why so many don't want to post pics on here. Just sayin'.

Yeah the sprig thing is bugging me too....I thought I had gotten rid of all the hens with sprigs, but found one this week with one. I'm wondering if she didn't just wander back down from the other pen at the house. Anyway,,,I remember back,,,a WHILE back the conversation turned to sprigs and how to find out which hens/roosters were carrying them, but I'm old and forgot everything. So now I gotta go back through the thread to find it. Was also thinking, if the people I got them from only culled sprigged combs out, but didn't find out which ones are carriers, then those birds are still in their flock, and every bird I've got could be a carrier....so I am bummmmmmed
Luckily,,,,,there were absolutely NO carnation combs in any of the birds, so I know that's one less problem. OK,,,I'm done venting

I know what you mean - I'll remember talking about something but can't remember exactly when it was...I like to use the "search this thread" option at the top. You could put "culling for sprigs" or something like that as your words to search on, and it will bring up all the posts that mention that in the narrative.

Wynette, I'm interested in how Nicol is creating her bantams. I had thought about doing that also, but don't know if I have enough know how yet to do that. Well, actually just wondering how bantams are created in the first place. That might be a question I need to post on the yahoo group, or one of the breeders forums.

Nicol is the right one to ask - I know she's been working on them for some time. There was someone else working on them down south....I want to say it was Jesus, but I'm just not sure. And, I do not believe he's doing it any longer. Also, Janice (geebs) was considering working on them...I don't know if she followed through or canned it, but she's got good genetic background & would also know who (at least back then, a couple years ago) was working on them. If you're interested, we could sure use more folks to work on them! Find someone that you click with, and ask a whole lot of questions! Most are more than willing to help!

I wasn't intending to be negative. Was I? The Marans are bantams that won? I missed that but I don't think that their not being LF or not being approved of has anything to do with what I was asking. Please do not construe what I was asking as being negative. I am having a terrible trouble being positive about my own endeavors. It seems every chicken conspires to have some problem as of late. I say again, they are lovely as far as I am able to 'judge.'

Chickens, even those at the biggest shows, are NEVER perfect. Even the ones on Champion Row in well-established breeds have "bits" we can pick at. I hope everyone also remembers that here, on this forum, we are also dealing with the added disadvantage of judging photographs. That said, those lobes weren't truly "white" as in Leghorn white. Nor were the eyes as dark as they appeared in that photo. Type is the biggest thing. No comments or question on type? And what about egg colour? Have any of us asked how she is doing with egg colour? Marans in general are still VERY much a work in progress. Especially those varieties that are not yet approved. I, for one, think it is FABULOUS that so many folks are working so hard with Marans and going to the trouble and expense of getting them out to shows.

It is truly discouraging when one posts a photo of birds that they are proud of - that they are making the effort to get out on display so we ALL can move forward with these birds on a serious basis - only to be met with a comment like this.

There should never be a problem with anyone asking a question without out everyone jumping in to defend that person in question. This Click stuff is killing the Marans threads. If we all were playing on the same field with the same immunity there would not be all the smart answers. look around at all the forum regulars that have left. You sure can not blame me this go round.

Don, we will NOT move forward unless folks are willing to show pictures. Folks will NOT show pictures when met with criticism. Here's the thing, and you and I have had this discussion many, many times. There is ALWAYS a way to say something without coming off as accusatory, negative, or snarky. For example - rather than saying something like, "how can a bird with yellow legs have been put up for BB?" perhaps something more like, "I may be not seeing the picture in the right light - does the bird have yellow legs? Just wondering."

I'm not criticizing the comment - I was posting merely as a reminder. AGAIN - if YOU, DON, received a comment like that, would you be likely to ever consider posting a picture again? I think not.

Frankly, I personally could give a rip whether the Marans threads are being "killed" - it's sure as heck not likely. There are many folks here & posting daily. What y'all need to be doing, rather than sitting behind your computers and pointing fingers at someone else's picture, is getting out there to the shows to SEE THESE BIRDS FIRSTHAND. The folks out there doing the good breeding work and showing are the ones who are moving this breed forward...not the ones sitting behind a computer.
